Holy shit, don't you think this is a little intense for a game for kids? On the first stage, in a place you've forced to walk by, no less

BARK BARK

Artificial difficulty has made certain retro games unplayable.

I know you're on a roll right now posting this in every thread but I think he was saying it's scary, not hard.

No, I mean it. How am I supposed to know I can even walk past that Chain Chomp? He moves to quickly and erratically and frankly, the barking conveys that I should go no further. Don't even get me started on the seesaw bridge.

Super Mario 64 has no examples of artificial difficulty anywhere. If anything it could have benefited from some stronger enemies (though I guess it would have been too much for the N64).

I only posted this in one other thread you little buttblasted baby. Refute my claims or die by the sword.

Mario 64 is extremely easy
The levels have almost no real challenge all the way until Rainbow Ride
They have tons of leeway and are basically designed as sandboxes to do fun stuff in instead of real platforming levels
I don't even think the long jump is ever required

>I don't even think the long jump is ever required
The reason why Mario 64 is truly kino is that you have more movement options than you need to use to beat the game
Everything you do with your mastery of the movement is you styling on the game and showing how YOU use YOUR own intelligence and skill to find a way to get past certain obstacles or sneak into a cheeky way to get a Star

Most kids playing this on release were born in the late 80's or the first year or two of the 90's. We grew up in a time where car seats didn't exist beyond age 2, coca cola was a beverage available at all times of day, clouds of second hand smoke were ubiquitous and inhaled literally 24 hours a day, and parental supervision could have been described as optional. A goofy ball on a chain in colorful land of make believe did not scare us.

are kids nowadays that fragile that this is too intense?

>> No.8656573 [DELETED]

>>8656560
Look, I know you might be jealous of us for not having to put up with this kind of stuff these days but you should really be happy that the next generation doesn't have to grow up with the same horrors that you did. This is way too intense for children.

the idea is adventuring anon.
I know modern gaming is made for neutered retards that need a clear, corridor-shaped path in order to progress.
but the idea was to rush right into the danger so you could check whatever was behind it.

People will say you're wrong but you're completely right. Creating designated platforming challenges where you HAVE to use a long jump or HAVE to jump dive or whatever would make the game extremely stale. The devs created all these great movement tools and fun basic physics and then set you loose on the gameworld to go explore the worlds and grab stars however you can. Its a pretty perfect setup.
