If you have disposable income, probably a Sega Saturn. If not, then I would recommend some Old school playstation or the 64. There is a Sega Genesis mini console you could get for a price of a regular AAA game. P.s if don't mind I'll recommend Powerslave Exhumed, it's an old school FPS shooter that you can get easily on modern consoles like the switch for 20$, albeit it's pretty tough to say the least.

I mean you've already got it with the Mario right? Anything Mario is good as long as it's respectable main-line stuff and not Mario Is Missing or whatever. Kids have low standards and the classics are great. Just pick something popular, provide a few classic games, and improvise from there.

I don't know what an appropriate progression would be though. I started with the Atari 2600 and liked it a lot (it's hard to love that thing), and then I was blown away by the NES and I loved that, and then I was blown away by the SNES and I loved that, and then I was blown away by the N64 and I would have loved that if I'd still been young enough to overlook how ugly early 3D graphics were. But if you start with the N64... what happens? Does the idiot kid start out with a disdain for the NES or the Genesis or whatever? You can only hide the modern world from your child to a very limited extent. I wonder what the best progression would be. It probably varies a lot from child to child really...

Just download full romsets and let the kids explore. I would have loved to get that freedom as a child. I feel like unless you specifically tell a child something is old and "bad", they wont come at it with that assumption. I remember one of the first games I had was Namco Arcade Collection for Windows, and it really didn't occur to me that those were old games at the time. That's just what some games looked like. I mean, what should Pac-Man look like in the 90's? You aren't coming at that question with any preconceived notions. You don't know 8-bit arcade games a a thing that is already "retro" at that point. One of life's biggest follies is trying to start a family before proper preparation.

First mistake you probably made was attempting to settle down before 30, as opposed to, sorting out your bullshit and building a foundation first and foremost.
Second mistake you definitely made was deciding to have a child before you and your partner practiced childcare to gauge readiness for the basic responsibilities and mental conditioning involved in rearing a child.

The problem is that there's the belief *everyone* must reproduce.

get a snes with the super gameboy cartridge and/or a gamecube with the gameboy player.
this way they can play their gameboy games on the big screen when they get home from being on the go.
gamecube + gameboy player being the most extensive solution considering the gbplayer can play games from the entire gameboy lineup.

for handhelds, go with the ds lite for the better, sleek design and screen brightness levels + gba support.
if you don't care about e-reader link and oob headphone support at all, and are fine with having a difficult time finding battery pack replacements, get the gba sp 101 revision; otherwise, the original gba is the way to go on the account of minimal risk and convenient battery replacements albeit higher cost favoring reduced risk (scarcity, battery boom boom).
>why not gameboy micro?
it's a neat device to have, but it only supports gba carts, and the battery it uses is hard to come by, and given its age, the charge hardly lasts an hour these days....
furthermore, its io interface is unique.

For the first 5 or so years I would probably just them a clone console with built in games and educational pc games on a non internet connected pc as that can help with reading and they may be able to learn programming or similar.
I've that young kids that started with modern games may play an old game but if they can't get past the first level in a minute or so they just put the game down and go do something else.
I would not let kids under about 12 play mobile games. Eventually when they ask for a new console I would probably get them one.
I had my xbox on with some young relatives with rare replay, the started to play and enjoy one of the speccy games that you walk between a bunch of rooms. So much for the americans who say speccy is unplayable.

Hard to say, if you give them a big box of nes games and the first game they play is mario 3, later they get to mario 1 they will probably think eww this game is shit and basic. I would probably just "find new games" every couple of years.

Kinda feel bad that they don't get to be blown away by going from atari to nes or sms and then the absolute shock of seeing multi layer scrolling for the first time.
Probably is ok to just skip atari and start with the super mario bros and then go to 16 bit after a couple of years instead of waiting the 5 or more years that people in the 90's did.
I remember that the kids that always got the new console as soon as it was out were pretty spoiled and didn't really appreciate what they had.

>>8654510

Funny, my brother is exactly the opposite of yours. He refuses to give my nephew access to the smartphone because he thinks they're designed to be addictive.

As far as your question goes, any console you may have conceivably played as a child will still be appropriate. Nintendo consoles tend to have more that is appropriate for all ages. My brother is a bit older than me so he mainly focuses on the SNES and the N64 since those are what he grew up with, whereas my nephew tends to play GameCube and Nintendo DS when he comes to see me, since he doesn't have access to one at home. I think the DS is really great as well, it has lots of games that are appropriate for kids, GBA support, and you can easily get a flashcart and load up anything you want on it.

The little one's got Sonic 1 & 2, CD, Crazy Taxi, Super Monkey Ball, the Mario 64 port, the list goes on.
I'll get more complex games like jarpigs once she's older, and emulators when she can figure those out.

For reletively cheap consoles, I would go for a DMG-01 (your classic gameboy) and a good flash cart. Install ROMS as presents every once and a while. As a parent the best thing about the gameboy is that it doesnt have a backlit screen, so when night falls its a lot harder to play (keeping them from overnighter's during school hours). A fixer upper DMG-01 (with quick fixes like an LCD burn) will sell for about 20USD. A good flash cart (GB Everdrive) will go for 40USD.

Im a 2000's kid that grew up on the Wii. I actually enjoyed a lot of NES wii-ware titles more than official games at the time (Mario 3 is better than New Soup Wii no contest)

Same went for TV, we had a bootleg tele service where the best channels were MEtv and Boomerang. Boomers unironically love my knowledge on late 80s shows, and chat about episodes im sure no modern 'kid' knows about.
(I still stan Matlock to this day)

This did have some 'odd' effects to my teenage years (I went all out on the 1920's athstetic with 78's and Al Bowly and Frank Miesler, when kids my age were rocking to metal) but ultimatly grew to be an average adult.

One.

But, ultimately it all traces back to the west germanic languages using one plural form for all three genders, like how in German you just use die for the plural article regardless of whether the noun is masculine, feminine, or neuter. So in Old English hie (the original form of they before the form with th- replaced it, either from the plural article þa or from an old Norse pronoun used in the north of England) quickly began to be used for indefinites because it was already being used for everything else.

You're fucked. My ex-wife was the same way, threatening divorce pretty much every week for years. I cheated on her and divorced her, specifically because I knew it was a bad idea to knock her up.

Then do better than your shit generation and keep him far away from fucking Mario 64. Start with the Atari and move to the NES and 80s arcade games and Commodore 8bit computer games. Maybe by then he'll figure out when you give him shit like DKC and Mario 64 that it's actually fucking garbage.

As an adult I make bank selling 'antiques' of all kinds. I often repair non electric devices including phonographs, ticker tape machines, typewriters, automata and projectors of all kinds. I can eaily flip a 100 year old hunk of trash into a 1000 dollar auction peice. Meanwhile you NEETs call me cringe, kek.

I bopped to 'Everywhere at the End of Time' and recognised the songs they ripped instantly. (Heartaches was pretty famous)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Syz5AvpJ5Yo&t=26s

I was lucky enough to talk with my Great Grandma, she recognised the songs I liked and I got to play them for her. I shit you not at one point I was told "I'm not that old!" after asking about 1910's stuff.

if it's not related to antique war memorabilia, vintage automobiles, vintage electronics [commodore vics, sega mega drive, nes, ibm clones, old macintosh computers, floppy/tape/disc drives, etc.], something useful, or something with significant value - they'd sooner spend their afternoon getting shitfaced, rather than, sift through cans of unopened paint cans among other things.

I have 3 sons, 6 4 and 2. I have given them a raspberry pi running retropie with a few games, nothing older than Dreamcast. The older two love it, although it's a good idea to introduce PC games too. My eldest also likes playing Black and White and Red Alert 2. Hope you have fun.

>hipster trash
Just because you dont understand something doesn't mean you cant enjoy it. Some people like what they like, everything has 'historical value'. I pull the same stuff your average classic car guy does. I repair, preserve, and enhance old stuff. I don't exactly sell to hipsters, most of the time the don't give a shit and will trash pieces of history for the hell of it and cant tell the difference between a Crosley from a Brunswick. Auction houses are the best bet for items that have a bit more value.
If you don't like it, fine by me. Everybody's got their niche.

In my opinion, the right way to start kids with video games, no matter the context, is with early Famicom games.
It's that sweet spot between simple arcade games, often single-screen games, some more advanced with scrolling, but always simple.
Then he can start playing more advanced games later, but early Famicom games will give him the right idea about video games.

Earthworm Jim. I'm convinced this game made me a better person and helped me through a lot as a kid. I'd highly recommend it as long as you're alright with levels called Buttville and a villain that's literally walking mucus.

>the best IMHO is the SNES version, but other anons disagree and that's okay

>> No.8660904

I would invest in getting a Wii. There are SO MANY kid friendly games on it, and the system itself still holds up to this day. Wii Sports is still kino.

Old game systems like N64 and SNES are also great. Super Mario World is the obvious choice, my siblings and I spent countless hours on that game.

It's a bit of a cliche, but it's true: Nintendo consoles are best for younger kids.
I found that when they get older, they will ask for whatever their friends have, so they can play games together online.

Never mind. Let someone else have this child.

If your idea of "raising him right" isn't spending time with him and taking him into the outside world, you're fucking up. He's not even here yet and you want to sit him down in front of a screen instead of being a parent.
Do your son a favor and abandon your family.
