What is a good danmaku / bullet hell game to ease into the genre with? I don't have a lot of experience with shooting games but these look fascinating.

Dodonpachi Resurrection/Daifukkatsu is one of the best to start with in my opinion, it was on sale on Steam recently (sadly it's not at the moment, but maybe if you wait a bit it will be on sale again). PC, 360 (it's also now on Switch) ports have a bunch of different modes and difficulty settings so it's a great introduction for that reason, just a really fun game all round. I think you can also just get the rom and play it in Mame, but you won't have all the different modes and stuff, so I'm not sure I'd recommend that. Great game though.

Mushihimesama is a good choice, also Espgaluda 1. Basically Cave's more beginner friendly games, that's going to be the best option probably.

You might pick up bad habits with the last spell system. I'd sooner start with PCB. I found MoF pretty easy too.

Castle of Shikigami, it has many characters with an alternate attack each, and grazing (which you inevitably do anyways) increases your shot power.

I bet you started playing video games because you were terribly unathletic. I bet you can’t even play video games well enough either. You probably suck at just about everything. Kill yourself.

Touhou 6, if you want something that's more of an arcade experience, Jamestown. Mushihimesama is a classic but the purple spam is very hard on the eyes.

Take all of the suggestions so far ITT and pick the one that's the most aesthetically pleasing as your first 1cc. Sticking to a game will be a lot easier if you love how the game looks, sounds, and feels.

IN is like one of the hardest ones, imo. The continue system is very strict. You can beat a stage and the game will still end because the timer hit 5:00 AM so you're really only allowed to continue twice unlike 3 times of the past games. Unless you grind out those shadow orbs or whatever, which good luck getting the required 8500 it asks for in a stage, especially if you're new. Plus to really beat the game you have to do it twice to unlock stage 6B. IN is brutal on stage 4 as well. Whichever boss you get it's pure hell.

I wouldn't say it's one of the hardest but it's clearly not the cakewalk people pretend it is, it's of average difficulty compared to the rest of the series and can get confusing. like a new player would wonder what the fuck is that human/youkai meter even if it actually doesn't matter for non-scoring runs, and that timer thing instead of a straightforward continue system is pretty convoluted. there's also the need to switch between focused/unfocused to kill some enemies (or even see them? can't remember it's been too long). and yeah whichever boss you get in stage 4 is hard compared to the rest of the series
PCB is just a better and more balanced game and better entry point because it's straightforward, even if SA/UFO are the actual peak of the windows games, but maybe a bit too hard for a newcomer (not retro but whatever it's the same engine as MoF which is retro)

Semi related to the subject I guess, but can anyone help with screen tearing in Touhous? I had none back in October when I played them, and I re-visit 7 and 8 last night and both have intermittent tearing about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom, but only when lots of bullets are on screen. Vpatch and setting v-sync in my graphics card settings can't fix it.

Yeah it's got that weird Ikaruga system going on too. Nice idea, but between that, the human/yokai meter, the collecting of night orbs, it's a complicated set of mechanics for a game that doesn't really need them. I know SA is considered one of the hardest, but IN is still the hardest one prior to that one, imo.

How hard is Mushihimesama? I remember it back in the early 2000s as being pretty famous for how crazy it looks. Is it really has hard as it looks?

Normal is a fairly beginner friendly game but still tough enough for newbies to keep entertained.
Maniac is a big step up and is around the difficulty of you average touhou game on lunatic.
Ultra is another big step up and is extremely difficult. Its not the most difficult Cave game, but it is definitely up there for the genre.
Both of the Mushihimisama games are pretty great in that you can graduate up the difficulties over time. Down normal and get some expereance with other games, then revisit it on Maniac later, and so on.
