My buddy and I finished Crystalis yesterday and we're looking for another action RPG to play through together, preferably NES. What are some under rated action RPG's on the NES?

I got this during a phase of buying retro NES games. It's pretty good.

Zelda II is an action RPG, if you didn't know about that.

if you don't mind a bit of shoot-em-up in your adventure games give The Guardian Legend a spin.

Zelda 2 is great, Willow is bland but decent, The Guardian Legend is good but its overhead-view sections aren't very polished, I haven't played Battle of Olympus... you kinda started the thread with the peak of this kind of game on the NES. Might wanna switch consoles

Is Guardian Legend an RPG? I forget. Anyway, how about Star Tropics? I forget if that's an action RPG or just a Zelda-like.

The first two Ys games have Famicom ports with translation patches. They don't get talked about much because of all the Ys ports to more powerful systems, but they have some exclusive content you won't find on the others.

Startropics is like zelda with more platforming. It's still good and you should play it anyway.

Hydlide, if you are just the right kind of people for it somehow.

MORE SERIOUSLY you two should try 8 Eyes since it lets you cooperate (one person gets to be the falcon).

Fucking loved Crystalis. What a surprise that was. Just picked up what sounded like a random cheap as fuck NES RPG and ended up being a great game. So blessed to have found it

Gotta second Hydlide. Feels very early RPG, has cryptic stuff sometimes and isn't long but damn is it fun.
People make fun of it and call it awful but the seemingly strange and "bad" mechanics are very interesting and take a little getting used to.

>Is Guardian Legend an RPG?
Nah, it's more of a Zelda-like in the sense that you have to traverse an overworld to find or buy power-ups to strengthen your MC. And instead of dungeons, you have to locate entrances to corridors where you go full shoot-em-up to clear out a boss and get the key to access a new area.

You do collect points by defeating enemies, and your max health increases permanently whenever you reach certain point totals.

I have a soft spot for this one. Not a particular pretty game, but the hack-and-slash gameplay is good fun. Unfortunately you can also equip bows and arrows, and they're grossly overpowered: you won't want to go back to swords/knives afterwards.

Two games that partially fit this and have surprisingly been mentioned on this board recently are Chronicle of the Radia War and Armed Dragon Fantasy Villgust. They aren't pure action like Crystalis is since you walk around and transition into battles, but the battles themselves are real time and insanely fun once you get the hang of them. In Radia, the battles even take place right where you were as there's no screen transition to an abstract battlefield, and you attack in real time controlling the main character while delegating commands to the other characters and relying on their (sometimes goofy) AI. In Villgust, you walk around an overworld and transition to a battlefield not too dissimilar from Zelda 2, being a platforming sideview.
