I played the first one a shitload. I was also on adderall at the time. I'll be honest it was mostly for the titties.

Regulation A is entertaining to play, and the announcer's voice is a huge meme

Played them, loved them, but not because they were good. Just didn't have access to any good games at the time. Loved Lien's design. Game had a lot of really bad characters though. Fucking Falcoon used harajuku designs for nearly everyone. I'm so glad that they ended up dropping Alba and Soire Meira because they were among the worst characters SNK has ever made.

Basically a red haired jpop twink and a gay cowboy. Believe it or not they intended for them to be a Japanese take on Terry and Andy Bogard. Basically, two martial arts brothers with a score to settle with the game's big bad. Well at least the sequel was an upgrade in every way.

KOF XV comes out this week. It continues SNK's long standing tradition of just not quite being able to make a good 3D fighting game.

is the KOF MI series like SF EX where a bunch of characters never show up in the main series?

Yes. It also had a lot of fan service characters too, like Fio from Metal Slug, Nightmare Geese, B. Jenet, and Lilly Kane(Billy Kane's younger sister.) Even though mechanically it didn't have a lot of depth it was still kind of fun to play noncompetitively.

Perhaps SNK wanted it to be as popular as its 2D fighters because they really did put a lot of money into it.

According to the SNK wiki Falcoon wanted her to be a western Mai Shiranui. Seems like Falcoon wanted a lot of things. Not many of them are obvious outside of his interviews.

That's twice already their ideas for important characters to these games being Japanese or Western variations on concepts already done, which kind of says why they weren't successful characters.

Because it's one dimensional? I mean there's a lot more depth to these characters than their nationality. The Bogard brother's story worked because the entirety of the game Fatal Fury was used to tell their story. For the Meira brothers they just kind of show up and the audience are supposed to care about them(despite them having no visible struggle.) At most we get some ingame text that infers that bad things happened and they're here after a timeskip to settle the score.

Then with Mai there's more to her than her looks. Her looks are a big part of her character since her fighting style of being a kunoichi revolves around using sex appeal catch opponents off guard. But where she really gains some depth is in her relationship with Andy. Andy, like his brother, desperately wants to avenge his father and so devotes himself completely to ninjutsu. Mai falls in love with him and from then on is always teasing him and has her tits and crotch in his face.

I know that video game characters usually aren't meant to have a lot of depth but I think Andy's struggles are overlooked and there is some depth there. He wants to defeat Geese as much as Terry does but must have difficulty getting real training in with Mai around.

It kind of asks the question of what is manlier: banging some premium grade triple S class alpha slut like Mai or completely subverting ones urges to devote yourself entirely to a martial art to get good enough to avenge your family's mortal enemy.

Of course Terry gets all of the credit in the end except that Joe and Andy were there to back each other up as they went through the tournament's fodder.

Fuck, now I want to go back and watch the Fatal Fury OVA. It's kino anime trash but it's 1990s kino anime trash. Hand drawn cell shading has a look about it that's missing from cgi anime today.
