I've never played Shenmue. Had a Dreamcast back in the day, but a game was on fucking 3 disc set and costed a lot so I bought Samba de Amigo instead. I literally held the game in my hands and put it back on a store shelf.

Today, I can download original ISO or HD edition for PC but I know it just won't be the same. After so many years, after so many games I won't be able to get the same experience as I could get as a teen.
I missed my chance.

I wish I could turn back time. Not for Shenmue but for myself being able to feel alive, see and enjoy things as I used to do.

I'm not saying that Shenmue was entirely responsible for that, but I found Ryo to be relatable as a 20 something year old myself, and his unwavering determination to find his father's murderer to be very inspiring. I'm also trying to save enough money to leave the United States and move to a country with a more affordable cost of living, so watching Ryo find his way and make friends in China makes the prospect seem less intimidating.

Rivalry between Shenmue and Yakuza is one of the dumbest things ever. I was into Shenmue when Yakuza came out and bought it expecting some Shenmue vibes. It turned out something completely different but really cool in it's own way. Never felt disappointed because it wasn't Shenmue or felt like Yakuza made Shenmue obsolete. I think Deadly Premonition was the closest to a Shenmue spiritual succesor, Yakuza was good at doing it's own thing, though I'm burned out as fuck after playing most of the main series since 2005, I'm glad it has become so succesful even in the west, it's nice to have been into it since the first game.

>> No.8643835

>>8643813
The Yakuza series is awfully repetitive too. Most people in the west were introduced with 0, so they don't realize how rehashy the games are up until 7. Shenmue 2 on the other hand took huge risks.

Sure they are, there's like 20 games in the franchise already. Also impressive in their own way, I'm still amazed at how Yakuza 5 was such a massive game, like the "San Andreas" of the saga, all that considering they are a relativelly modest studio.
But Shenmue was state of the art, both technically and in game design, there's still not too many things that can be compared to it.

Not at all. Shenmue is a slow detective game. It's all about the small details and general slowness of day to day life. The in-game clock is integral to how it works, every single NPC is named with a written backstory and their own behaviour, again integral to the game as a whole.
Yakuza is closer to Streets of Rage with random battles, focus on minute attention to detail is not a factor, the crowds around you might as well be faceless automatons, time in the game is static. They're so completely fucking different that I can't help but feel people who view Yakuza as some evolution of Shenmue to be mentally challenged if they have indeed played both.

>> No.8654361

>>8653054
Ridiculous take. Shenmue two is not slow, you also uncover a mystery in yakuza. The difference being that in Yakuza they didn't give a few lines for 99% of NPCs to repeat. Also lol at comparing yakuza to streets of rage, you either haven't played streets of rage, or yakuza, or either. Just because games have different pacing doesn't mean they're nothing alike, it's clear that the structure yakuza was built on is a modification of the one created with shenmue.

>> No.8654374

Agreed. People who bitch about Shenmue being boring are missing the point. Hell, your dying dad in the game tells you the most important thing is your friends and the ones you love. Old people in the game will tell you to slow down and enjoy life. Your friends are all worried about you.
The plot is that you're out for revenge, but the message is to take it easy. Don't let your goals interfere with enjoying the day to day. To learn patience.
