Both great games.
You gotta remember that mario 3 was 8bit, SMW was 16bit. From a technical standpoint I'd actually say Mario 3 was more impressive, it was on the same console was the very first Mario game. For the hardware limitations they had it was, and is incredible.
Anyway, both awesome games

It does some things better. SMB3 has more variety in settings, more powerups, and an inventory system. It's also much more challenging and has more of a classic Mario feel since it has a lot of classic enemies missing from World like regular goombas and regular hammer bros. Even so I think World is better because it has Yoshi, the big branching overworld, a lot of secret exits, two whole secret worlds, and greater audiovisual fidelity. The last point was rectified by All-Stars but that has ugly palettes, reinteprets some aspects of the environments, and doesn't do the original music justice.

>Mario 3 is literally unironically better

- No Yoshi
- 8-bit graphics, smaller washed-out color palette
- No secret exits
- Shorter levels
- Has flying in game but still primarily focuses on X-axis, World has much better verticality
- No star road with Special Zone expert levels
- Can't replay particular levels without restarting game
- Can't save the game
- Final boss battle is a practice of avoidance, lame
- Generic boss battles in general in comparison to the dynamic ones of World, like the Reznors for example
- Flight and control characteristics of racoon are trivial compared to cape Mario
- No spin-jump, objectively the best move they ever game him since his inception....Mario 3 insists you stand there and wait while a Spiny shuffles on by, SMW encourages you to be proactive and continue playing
- Shittier bonus games
- Mario 3 is a stage play? I want a story and world to save, not the Matrix
- Shit cutscenes compared to World's after defeating the bosses
- Each castle in World is different – unlike the generic airships in Mario 3, which are the same, slow auto-scroll with palette swaps
- Less variety of enemies and their techniques to attack Mario
- Needed a Hollywood movie to sell it, World sold the SNES.
- B...but muh Hammer Suit!!!

Listen, Super Mario Bros 3 is a great game, but you people need to take off your nostalgia goggles. Basically, Super Mario World took Super Mario Bros 3, tore down its walls, and built something better on its foundation. Super Mario World is an improved SMB3. It’s as simple as that.

The cape is so poorly implemented in World it's fucking nuts. Only hacks make use of it in a way that isn't either gimmicky or cheaty, and a lot of them largely forego it. That's largely the problem with World. It has tons of great mechanics and tools in its kit, but the base game hardly uses them to the fullest or properly.

The real difference is the economics. You can use OP flying in a handful of SMB3 levels and you can have a few of them stocked. That's it. In SMW you have an infinite supply of feathers and purple Yoshis that are trivial to obtain.
