Kitase mentioned Edea and the sorceresses are based on the Wicked Witches and Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz. And a lot of the fantasy stuff in FF8. He confirmed Estar was going to be green like the city of Oz too.

Nomura might have been inspired by Edea and Seifer when he added Maleficent and Riku. He confirmed Destiny Islands was inspired by the FF8 opening.
