I think the only indication you have that he is a newbie in gameplay terms is his Alpha 3 metsu/shin shoryuken. If you just use it normally, it's the evil metsu shoryuken. If you have the skill or luck to hit with the last active frame he will use the actual shin shoryuken instead. Like he isn't as consistent as SF3 Ryu who can just use the shin shoryuken normally always.

I haven't seen this commented on much, but Akuma looks like Zodd from Berserk. And for SF3 onwards, Ryu got a rework that made him look a lot more like Guts from Golden era. It's when Ryu got the spikey hair like Guts.
