Many games made in 1986 and later have Spectrum 128 support certainly anything from the larger publishers like Ocean did and have actual music and less load time (though the initial game load takes longer)

Looking online, I don’t think so. Apparently if the tape loader on the keyboard itself buggers out, it’s a simple fix with a screwdriver but I wouldn’t bet on that. Honestly best bet is to avoid the Amstrad models as they’re known for being faulty and awkward. Best choice to get i would say, is the Spectrum Plus. Keyboard isn’t a total fucking nightmare and it supports tape loading. The other Plus computers don’t fully support most of the library due to how it handled tapes, so this is your best bet if you want something that works with every tape released for it and has a good keyboard

Be wary though that the none rubber key model is notorious for hardware failure. There’s the Spectrum 128k which fixed those issues but you might pick up a Spanish model as they were developed for the Spanish market first, so he warned. Honestly all the Spectrum models are a total gambit in quality. Doesn’t matter what make it is, there’s always something wrong with it. Shitty keys, malfunctioning tape deck, developed for third world countries, etc. Its a total free for all

Serious question: why do Spectrum fans have a perceived rivalry of sorts with NES?
You never see Spectrum being mentioned on NES threads, but NES is always mentioned on Spectrum threads.
What's the rundown? Was there a Spectrum vs NES rivalry in UK back in the 80s? You'd think the rival would be another PC, not a japanese console.

>> No.8629320

>>8629305
With the NES? Absolutely not. No one gave a shit about Nintendo then. If you owned a console you probably had a Master System. NES only did well when the Ninja Turtles bundle got released but it quickly got overtaken by the Master System. The real rivalry was between Spectrum and Commodore users

put 2 and 2 together, genuine spectrum posters aren't interested in NES, they have no hatred of it, they simply don't care about it and I don't mean it in a bad way.
It's trolls starting flamewars who come in here and shit the threads up with Nintendo, that's why there are no mentions of speccy in NES threads, it's that simple.

zxrenew do replica 48k cases and membranes too. That's a 128k board you you might have to dremel out a hole for the RGB socket.

If you haven't bought the harlequin board yet then I'd suggest you go with buy a raspberry pi instead and use zxbaremulator on an sd card with all the games on it.

>> No.8635071

>>8635063
The Spectrum Galaxian would be almost perfect except for lacking the little fanfare tune when you start the game. Perhaps they had the arcade source code. It would be unusual to but occasionally it did happen (like with Rodland) and as it was a Z80 game the code would be easy to convert for the Spectrum.

>> No.8635081

>>8635071
>The Spectrum Galaxian would be almost perfect except for lacking the little fanfare tune when you start the game
playing music on a Spectrum is not very easy to do because of the CPU-driven speaker. you have to do a bunch of delay loops to play different notes and it's a real PITA. so not many Spectrum games have music, and if they do it it will just be on the title screen or something and not in-game because you have to stop everything else to operate the speaker.

>> No.8635089

>>8635081
I know...the Apple II was the same way. Bill Gates said in an early 80s interview, "One of the big improvements of the [IBM PC] is that you can easily play music on it. On the Apple II you had to be a real bits-and-bytes man for that."

The Speccy port of Moon Cresta is awesome, as is Ms Pacman. For those early ports I think the Vic20 has better versions than the c64 anyway.

>> No.8635876

>>8635817
Most of the Atarisoft stuff on the VIC-20 isn't all that good and the C64 ports are also not impressive. The Spectrum Ms. Pac-Man is not bad although it's clearly a port of the Atari 8-bit version rather than the arcade. In theory it would be easier to port a lot of the classic early 80s arcade games to the Spectrum because they were Z80-based.
