You also miss out on lua mods if you care about that. The argument has been made that OpenMW is going to support lua soon, but they've been saying that for a couple years now and it's unlikely they'll be able to implement support properly until having a 1:1 recreation of the original engine.

I've noticed this with NPCs too. One quest (Kidnapped by Cultists) is almost impossible to beat without cheating, because the NPC you're rescuing won't follow you through the path out the ruin and won't jump down the cliff.

I've tried going to other places to see if OpenMW had any issues or not, since it's obviously unfinished, and I'm always met with an almost cult-like infatuation with it where everyone claims it's surpassed vanilla in every way and that you can load 1000+ graphical mods and still play at 120+fps.

I have about 200 hours on an OpenMW save with Tamriel Rebuilt and only official mods/plugins. I've played the original for hundreds of hours too but OpenMW is easier to mod and with the last update has arguably the best "vanilla" visuals since it supports things like longer view distance and more light sources natively. Not to mention real time shadows on terrain and objects that follows the sun

At least when you enable longer draw distance it does. There is a toggle for distant lands so you can see the difference with the press of a button, and it unfortunately seems to do a lot more than just extend the draw distance, but it's possible i set it up wrong.

Lol reading their threads it's pretty clear they have a major case of freetardism. Same problem with openrct2 they think they know best and will majorly change large game mechanics because they can. In openrct2 you can build gigacoasters with boosters which is way outside original intention and broke as fuck.
It sucks that if you want to use a modernized version of a game you have to deal with the devs changing the experience no matter how "vanilla" they claim to make it. Even the Morrowind code patches did this with unneeded fixes and other very opinion based changes that others had to go and make repaired code patches so we could avoid them.
Basically OpenMW needs to accept they're not vanilla and go wild or reign it in and match vanilla behavior.
At least Daggerfall unity is trying as hard as he can to make it work like real Daggerfall. Even with an ugly retro mode for purists.

OpenMW works fine and fixes some major problems from the vanilla engine. Don't let muh purism autists stop you from trying it. If you want to use MWSE-lua mods, use the original engine, cause they're not compatible with OpenMW. The engine of Morrowind is a piece of shit, and it saddens my heart to see people swear fealty to it for the sake of purism. Even saying shit like "well even if OpenMW has better pathfinding it also has a bug where AI can't go down steep slopes so it sucks" when the vanilla engine has utterly atrocious AI that gets stuck on fucking EVERYTHING.

I wouldn't say the engine remake is bad. It's just that MCP + MGE is literally all you need. Dumb fuck above says the game crashes all the time because he never learned how to search the internet. This plain and simply is the best way to play Morrowind. There isn't a better way, and if you think there is then you're tricking yourself.
No point to OpenMW. It's just a coding exercise for the modders and a waste of time for users. There's nothing I'd ever want to mod extra into Morrowind. The game's flaws are fundamental and modders aren't clever enough to fix bad game design, so that will never happen.
