For me it would be the assurance that everything is going to be compact and efficient, without lots of worthless slow animations or voice acting or excessively fancy-looking midriff-baring shirtlets bogging down the story and mechanics - or, even, very much text or coloration at all. It'll just be game game and more game. Can't make anything but a game on such a primitive device!

>> No.8615104

>>8615094
Well, the thing I like is the aesthetic, there's just something about it. I remember playing the Zelda Oracle games and I loved them, this was in the 00s, my first console was the GBA and these were the only GBC games I had. Not too long ago I played through the first Medarot game since it had received a fan translation, and while this is a game for the original Gameboy with Super Gameboy support it has the same general comfy aesthetic. I'm really looking forward to fan translation of Medarot 3, it's an actual GBC game.

>> No.8615107

>>8615094
Uh, it should also be mentioned that the GBC was basically a faster original Gameboy with added colour support, so there were a bunch of really experienced programmers around, hence why a lot of games on the GBC are technically quite impressive.

limited gamma on GBC screens, lack of backlight, and being stuck to 3 colors per sprite/4 per tile resulted in developers choosing warmer yet desturated color palettes that would be legible under direct sunlight. you don't see many cold dark GBC games because all you get from that is your own reflection staring back at you. so there's a lot of warm fuzzy good feel adventures on the system.
the devkits actually had built-in screens pulled from the same lots as the retail units, so devs could know exactly how their games would look on real hardware.

no idea about current prices, a few years ago you could get GBC and GBA devkits for $150~200 or less. There are a lot of variations out there, some have all the hardware on board, some end as carts you can plug into a retail unit.
Old handheld kits as a whole tend to be more common than other console kits because they were practically the same price as a retail unit. Blizzard even bought some GBA kits just to fuck around with a Diablo spinoff that never happened.

It wasn't a child sex ring, what actually happened was that the CEO was engaged in compensated dating with an underage 15 year old junior high school girl and then got caught having sex with her in a hotel room. There's no information that I could find on whether or not Smilesoft going defunct the same year was directly linked to that or not, but either way a successor company called Rocket Company was established with the exact same guy as the CEO. I think the Telefang IP went to them, but they disappeared as well so who the fuck knows who owns it now.

The graphics are far more abstract being 8bit. This lets your mind wonder and your imagination fills things in whether you realize it or not. Also and this isn’t exclusive to 8bit/GBC games but older RPGs where you actually read all the dialog yourself and that have to use in game graphics at all times creates a certain state of immersion in that world
