I tried, and actually disliked it, despite being a fan of Undertale. Beginnings is very ugly and obtuse, it feels like a low-budget beta build of a game that was never released. Earthbound, on the other hand, is vastly superior visually, but it manages to fall into every 90s JRPG pitfall and then some. These games were obviously carried entirely by their story, but said story has been spoiled to me ages ago, and feels like a watered down version of Undertale.

The "roms were found on the internet" rumor was debunked ages ago.
But yeah it's kind of shitty.
I think Nintendo doesn't know what the fuck to do with it's back catalog because I think the Wii, 3DS, and WiiU Virtual console didn't really set the world on fire in terms of sales. Like I don't know what the average VC sales were per unit sold but I'd imagine it was probably less than $10. So even if every Wii owner bought $10 of VC titles, which I still think is a bit generous, that's about $1 Billion in gross revenue. Which is a lot, but that's eaten away by all the licensing agreements, setting up the emulation, maintaining the storefront for almost 10 years.
And then on the other hand you have something like Super Mario 3D All-Stars which sells 9 million copies in 6 months, effectively pulling in more than half a billion in gross revenue with effectively no licensing or long term overhead.

So I think if you're Nintendo you're in a little bit of a predicament
People SAY they want a VC and want to be able to buy games as they please, but the reality is those people are a super small minority and a lot of those people are just pirating anyway.
Then people will show up in droves to buy an official remaster, like with Skyward Sword and Links Awakening but there aren't enough development resources or even release windows to remaster everything. Plus it's pretty hard to remaster something for the NES/SNES and justify a $60 price tag

So to me the NSO model isn't that surprising, because they can have their cake and eat it to; They can be collecting some revenue on their back catalog but if they choose to remaster something people won't feel like they've paid for the same game twice.

>>8620803
I do think, if Nintendo does follow through with the Switch with a Switch 2 (which they'd be retarded not to, but Nintendo is Nintendo) they should approach their back catalog in a slightly different way.
Keep the NSO as is, it's a solid value add for a lot of people.
Then they should reprint certain games under the Nintendo Selects banner, sell them for $30.
Then they should go through their back catalog and group 2 or 3 games together and ship them under a new Nintendo Classics banner.
One per month, $40 each. Digital or physical, but the physical games would probably have to be ordered online because like I said, these are kind of niche.

Stuff like
Pikmin 1 + 2
Paper Mario, TTYD, SPM
Wind Waker + Twilight Princess
Ocarina of Time + Majoras Mask
Wario Land 1 + 2 + 3 + 4
Luigi's Mansion 1 + 2

and so on. Then make the physical editions have reversible covers so the spines line up like the old nintendo powers did.

That way people couldn't grumble about not actually owning the games they pay for, you take advantage of the coomlectors who would want a complete set, but most importantly
The Switch has kind of a problem with sequels, there are lots of games where you can't easily play the prequels to them. Like Luigi's Mansion or Pikmin 3 for example. So by having the one two punch of selects and then the classics, you lower the barrier of entry for these series by a lot, and I think that's how you keep these brands healthy.

Anyway thanks for reading my blog.

It's true though
If you listen to people who claim to be huge Earthbound fans virtually none of them have played through all three games
And it's like, you're such a huge fan that you couldn't be bothered to play just three games? Compare that to how many freakin entries Final Fantasy, Ys, DQ, or Megaten has. Hell, you can tell a lot of these same fans have probably played through a dozen different Pokemon games. But when it comes to Mother discussion, there's always a qualifier.
>I never actually played Earthbound Zero
>I'm waiting for Mother 3 to be localized
>I started this game, but never finished it. I'll have to someday, though.

And then a ton of people who only have played Earthbound never even made it past Moonside.
90% of the fan art and fan discussion is from the first half of the game, because tons of "fans" just straight up don't recognize Scaraba or Deep Darkness.

And then the people who HAVE played through all three games are way more likely to have the stance of
>Yeah, they're fine. They're not the best RPGs out there but they have some fun ideas.
because those are the people who will actually dive into a bunch of different series without hesitation, so deifying Earthbound just seems fucking weird
t. Played through all 3, Earthbound Zero is my favorite

Because the Japanese cover is literally just the word "Mother". They were probably afraid people who weren't too familiar with the series would think they were too lazy to do a real boxart mock-up for it, so they threw proto-nes on there.

How much should they charge? $20? fuck off lmao. the game itself still works fine, the label just sucks. It only takes off about 10% value max. I'd value at 350 minimum in that condition

Well maybe if Nintendo gave a fuck about the series enough to bring them to the west during the GBA-era, or even to Wii, maybe they wouldn't rightfully be miffed.

Jesus, I would call that fanart-tier, but your average fan artist could do better than that.

I got filtered by that beeg truck. Angry Truck or whatever the fuck. I think I save scummed my way through that fight. Then I gave up shortly after Magicant, but only because I didn’t like playing on my phone.

That’s how I played it for the first time. Comfy. And there was the save state, if I didn’t want to find a phone.

I'd be surprised if someone buys a switch just to play earthbound. I subscribed to the online service so I could play games with my friends, not to emulate the consoles and games I already have. Playing puyo puyo 2 snes with my friend from my hometown is a bonus

I started it on the snes mini and then ended up playing it through on real hardware. Just make sure you look up a pdf of the guide that would've originally been included.

Started with beginnings. I just got Lloyd in my party. Feel pretty burnt out already though. Should I stick with it?
