I like to think that the weird and surreal imagery in Sonic is a hold over from when the game was set inside a dream/nightmare. The worlds in Sonic are never explained, but does it really matter?

Why do the Chaos emeralds appear on a different island/location in each game? Is there more than one set of emeralds at play here?
My headcanon is that every major location in the Sonic universe has its own set of chaos emeralds associated with it.

>>8605531
Their name implies it, they're chaotic.
I personally think of the Sonic 1 Chaos Emeralds as the original ones, the ones that started the chaos that is Sonic The Hedgehog.
Sonic 2's Chaos Emeralds are the superation (intergalactically speaking) of the original Chaos emeralds from based Sonic 1, but 2's have the extra one that multiplies Sonic's spirit and makes him turn into the legendary Super Sonic (which Dr. Robotnik predicted when he created Sonic).
Sonic 3's Chaos Emeralds, to me, aren't real emeralds, Sonic & Knuckles have the real superation of Sonic 2's emeralds.

>> No.8605602

Not retro, but I enjoy how the movie continuity is giving more context to the tribal stuff that appears on South Island.
Maybe they should maybe the origin bit of the movie as part if Sonic canon if they want, but it probably wouldn't work in some way.

It is a common misconception that the Chaos Emeralds are named that because of some association with chaos. They are actually called that because they were created by the Chao, the same ancient race that built the Marble Garden and the Hydro City.

The early games are actually much easier to justify because Sonic is teleported to some cross-dimensional special stage to obtain them. As far as Sonic 1-3 are concerned, they can be from anywhere, and then S&K informs you that their home is the Hidden Palace Zone, which isn't necessarily a disagreement with anything until Sonic Adventure.

That's non-retro retconning, "Chao" didn't exist and weren't even an idea in Yuji Naka's mind until the nightopians in Nights.
The Marble Garden was probably built by some galavanting greeks or whatever, not the Chaos.

You could argue Jefferson Starship did if, in some way, the Sonic universe fits into their city build upon rock and roll. Sonic was supposed to be in a band...

No. They were simply "the seven emeralds" until Chaos fucked up the echidnas, after that shit went down they were called "Chaos Emeralds."

Chaos emeralds are basically just dragonballs, right? I guess it's implied that they have a will of their own, and they resist ownership up to a certain point. They always end up getting away from their owners and getting scattered throughout the world.
Also, I've never seen Dragonball. Is that how it works?

I always thought the emeralds were just hidden so Eggmancouldnt just yoink them all in one place. Sonic does that for him essentially which is why Egfman puts up fairly little resistance, he litteraly builds ramps and loopty loops into his battleships and factories. He knows Sonics coming, the point is to lead him right into the boss room where he can kill that pesky hedgehog and steal all of the emeralds at once, no special stages work required.
