Currently playing this and I am SHOCKED this never got released outside of Japan - maybe for the first time ever legitimately baffled when it comes to these matters. This game is just bursting with quality. Had never heard of it only a couple of days ago but it is right up my alley. I wholeheartedly recommend anyone of you who know Japanese and are into exploration and adventure games to give this a try. It seems that some transcribe the title to "Wander Trek" or "Wander Track" instead of "Wonder Trek" - or any combination thereof.

Anyway, here's a guide (in Japanese):

Always hard to answer this question and I haven't even finished it yet - so my view might change. I find it not a naturally occuring thought while playing a game to ask yourself: "Could I do this part if I wasn't able to read any of this stuff?" On top of that I am also never sure how much trouble people are willing to put up with in order to see an import title through. Like do you do this sort of thing on the regular? Are you willing to consult playthroughs on Youtube or Nicovideo? (I've seen there several on spread over both platforms. Even saw one speedrun.) Will you paste parts of a Japanese walkthrough into google translate if you get stuck? Or do you expect things to flow smoothly all the through?

So far there realy hasn't been that much dialog. But there is a mechanic where you can talk to the Professor who's at your side. You can show inspect items and show them to him from specific angles and he'll give you his thoughts on them. Eventually you find the tavel journal belonging to the person you're looking for. After all there is some reading involved and the story has an element of mystery to it. Mostly it's about exploration though. As you can probably tell from the map, this is not a 100% linear game. Right from the beginning you can go in any of 6 different directions from you basecamp located in the heart of the island and explore the environment to your hearts content. I honestly have no idea how far into the game I am and how long it's going to be - and I don't wanna know either. I haven't actually looked at pic related.

I'm saying it's bad, but I can ttoally see why this wouldn't be released. It is not graphically all that impressive, and it uses 2D sprites with simple 3D backgrounds. The opposite is much more acceptable.

In terms of presentation and gameplay it is a more advanced SFC or MD game, a bit like the Landstalker series. It is not a Resident Evil, Final Fantasy 7, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Gran Turismo, Tekken, or anything like that. It's a game that can easily run on the Saturn. It doesn't sell it self in screenshots, and they can't announce this as a superior game that is better than N64 or Saturn titles.

From a business decision this makes perfect sense for Sony USA to not push for this game over here.

Sprite characters in 3D environments was very common though and not only on PS1. Arguably doing it the other way around produces better or more aesthetically pleasing visuals, but from a purely technical standpoint the former is much more impressive to me even just because you can do away with 100% static camera shots - and tank controls too while we're at it.

Sprites in 3D environments are good but at the end of the day you know you're looking at sprites. The mech you pilot in Bulk Slash was supposed to be fully 3D but the devs ran out of time and ended up just making it out of sprites. It's basically lacking depth compared to everything else around you in the game. No shading or ambient lighting from different directions will be shown on a sprite character compared to a 3D one.

Well, it's not impossible to do that sort of stuff. It's just that barely anyone bothered to do it back then. But you can have palette swapped sprites for specific regions or scenarios in a game to accomodate for altered lighting. Theoretically you can even do it for dynamic lighting effects as well. It's just a really tedious process depending on how many objects you actually want to do it on. One of the most extreme examples of this would be Brigador (see pic related). Even lasers and howitzer shots flying down streets light up the spritebased artwork dynamically. Back in the day this wouldn't of course have been technically feasible on this scale and level of detail.

No, a certain forum called resetera is known for harassing fan translators to censor Japanese games, and a "certain demographic" is over-represented there.
"Transphobia" is a frequent accusation, not just for translators who don't cover newhalfes but even stuff like gnosia or other things that has things like "aitsu", "asexual transhumanist people", tomboys, crossdressers, etc. and those things don't match the "trans identity" exactly, so it makes them "unintentional transphobia" that needs to be "corrected" to, of course, the characters written as "trans", "as they should be". Even instances of "gendered language" is changed because it's "not welcoming" to resetera.
It's a cult that evangelizes transgenderism, and frequently threatens translators and writers into enforcing trans-normative tropes, where "trans" is the new normal.

Some of them went as far as infiltrate translation groups to implement their policies first hand. You'll notice they'll be weirdly hostile towards the games and the audiences they're supposedly targeting, and they'll be constantly lying about how much they change while at the same time trying to snipe projects from other teams (and yes they'll accuse them of not translating the games accurately, of "censoring" the game, etc)
Resetera members run their own media apparatus (r/games, hardcoregaming101, snescentral, some twitter names, some journalists though those were scared off by resetera's own pedophila scandals) and will frequently promote the hell of their puppet teams (geofront, luminatales, iwakura productions) even when those have little to show for it. They love to steal credit. Fake it till you make it, is the name of their game.

Fortunately, most translators aren't "trans", they're still relatively diverse and independent, as long as they do their own thing and don't pay attention to what's going on. But if you're playing an English translation it's a coin toss whether the tranny influence happened or not.

I do English translation romhacks and I know other fellow translators that share the same sentiment. The game translation scene isn't beyond saving, and there are people still laser focused on providing English versions as accurate as possible to the source material, despite what any control freaks out there might think, or any drama that might take place. It's disheartening to see so many people lose hope, but the situation isn't that bleak. That said, people should learn Japanese and not have to depend on anyone's whims.

You're pretty naive about these people. Once you get labeled "transphobic" or "TERF", all bets are off and anything goes. Jill Bearup got tagged as such because of a post she made years ago, and once Tom Scott made a video with her, there was a campaign to shame Tom, get him to pull the video, and for her production company to fire her. Tom wrote a big apology and then Jill's production company let her go.

Is this "illegal" harassment? Maybe maybe not. No one's doing anything about it. Jill will have a much harder time being hired.

This stuff actively harms communities, divides people, and just makes everyone angry on both sides. Read up on "purity spirals" and how on social media they become radicalized.

At least try harder. you're standing out so that "we" and chasing people out rings hollow.

You're telling people to take meds or whatever for bringing out the issue that it's better to play it in Japanese and embrace dekinai-chan's ways rather than rely on an unreliable translation. That and some weird bullshit distribution of blame for shit translations, because all translators are trannies or something, as if censorship is inherent to translation and no one here is allowed to disagree lest they get snark from some internet armchair psychanalist, doing apology for literal psychos.

>"harassed"
Coordinated private messages full of insult, phone calls in real life, even trying to accuse the translator of political affiliations and contact their own workplace, and telling some hosting hubs to publicly denounce them. Like it or not, "harassment" is real, those scare quotes are uncalled for.

>Do you need their approval, help or money to finish your projects?
Deep cutting question to ask to a hobbyist wasting time on chink cartoon games but for me I do weird stuff I want and I share it online for people who might be interested in the same game, because I want more people to play this hidden gem I already played in Japanese, or because I do it for the technical challenge. Part of it is some desire to see more people do other translations.

Translation isn't as easy as simply replacing the Japanese text with the English equivalent. A lot of these text boxes are designed with a certain amount of characters in mind and Japanese tends to be a lot more compact than English. Using the provided image as an example.

>[ワライフクロウ] (7 characters)
>[Laughing owl] (12 characters, including space)

What? The whole PS1 library was dumped ages ago and thoroughly combed through. You can download every PS1 game in existence and try them out one by one if you feel like it. Sometimes a decent game that never got much attention becomes a meme but it isn't untapped by any stretch.

That's two challenges, one is to fit the characters in memory (you can't, but you can repoint to the end of the file and do whatever you want) and another is to change how they display (a simple width hack to change the fixed spacing to a lesser value is all what's needed here)
They're easier to fix than you'd expect. Patches for Wachenroder and the Spanish translations for Germs and Mizzurna and Baroque exist.

So you just want to sweep it under the rug, pretend it doesn't happen because it's easier to pretend? It's having a real impact on the romhacking community, and it's not a positive one. It's as simple as that. Romhacking requires at least some online community organization and promotion, and this makes it harder. The BBC radio documentary shows other examples of this in other communities as well.

No, that's a second font.
Game uses a mix between the PS font (in the bios) and its own font which is only the characters it needs. Earlier text dump used Shift-JIS but it's mostly monster descriptions.

For the rest, the game font uses custom mappings, but the order of the glyphs used is more inspired by Unicode. But NOT Unicode. (notice the antiquated wi/we characters replaced with punctuation, and others moved around) It was generated to suit the kanji most frequently used in this game.

In Shift-JIS they go regular iroha かきくけこ and then further down after they're done they have duplicate iroha clusters with the ゛゜like がぎぐげご.
In Unicode, they go かがきぎくぐけげこご in one single cluster.

>>8605157
>Rival Schools 2 Dating Sim mode
Now that's something I'd like to see in my lifetime.

>encryption
not the correct word, encryption is when developers don't want to to open or change the contents because they hate modders. Maybe in save files for monster taming games or visual novels by xenophobic developers or online games to prevent cheating, but not a common sight.
Usually if a game's content are incomprehensible, it's because the developers used memory saving techniques known as compression. Compression aims to reduce repetitions, or store the most frequently repeated parts in the shortest way possible. Once you see it from that perspective it's very easy to unravel the compression and write tools to handle compressed assets.
Text and graphics might be part of those compressed assets.

The word you want is "encoding". In other terms, what hexadecimal value matches what letter.
There are common ones for English (ASCII) and Japanese (see this http://www.rikai.com/library/kanjitables/kanji_codes.sjis.shtml ) which are Shift-JIS, EUC-JP (rare, used in Hybrid Heaven and Alcahest) and Unicode (relatively newer standard, but ubiquitous today)
Developers can choose to respect these standards.

Developers can also say "wait, do we really have to blow our memory budget on bitmaps for 8000 moonrunes?" and use their own custom encoding. Just the letters they need. For Wonder Trek it's just 1100 characters for the story font. That font won't use ABCD.. but a custom sequence.
You can extract the font from memory at runtime or from the static assets, you can guess that sequence, and then include it as a parameter in search tools. I'm using this https://github.com/WerWolv/ImHex and some other tools ("relative search tools") to search for text that uses custom encoding, and regular hex editors with search options for SJIS, etc.

On one hand this argument makes sense because it's true, Sony would rather market games that featured 3D heavy graphics even if they were actually shit rather than good fully 2D games or 2D games with 3D backgrounds or some models

But on the other hand, we eventually got Alundra, Wild ARMs 1 and 2, Tomba!, Klonoa, Rayman 1, Adventures of Lomax, Hercules, Skullmoneys and large etc on the west, I think a game like this had more chances of having a decent run than a game like Kula World for example and that didn't stop Kula World to be released eveywhere
