I'm thinking about getting into the series, Should I play the original versions of the first 3 Zelda games or the GBA ports?

>> No.8597803

Unless you're hellbent on playing everything on a GBA I'd say you should go with the original versions for the first two for sure. The Classic NES versions of NES games all have squished sprites. People hate on the Four Swords port of ALttP but I thought it was just fine, personally. I'd still suggest you go for the original version of that one, but the GBA version isn't really as significant of a downgrade as the ports of the first two are. I've noticed that people online love to hate on it purely for the added voice samples.

LoZ and Adventure of Link, play any version, but A Link to the Past, play the SNES version, not the GBA.

not him, but the GBA versions of LoZ and AoL are the exact same game. The GBA version of LttP is different.

If you have a Gamecube it’s probably cheaper overall to get the collectors edition. You can play every non-handheld retro Zelda on GC except Link to the Past.

Between Gamecube and GBA, you can play them all!

The classic NES series kind of sucks. hell it's better to emulate with pocketnes even.

you can't play that game on an everdrive lol

>> No.8598183

GBA versions of LOZ and Zelda2 are fine if you want to play the original games on your game boy but if you're playing just play the NES versions since it's true that they had to squish the pixels and the aspect ratio is wrong. It's not a huge deal but I mean if you're emulating why play the shittier version, if you're playing on actual hardware then I can see the appeal.

ALTTP actually has a new/better translation, so at least it has something better than the original. Negatives include having a different aspect ratio, you have two less buttons even if things are remapped and you have the OOT link grunts which can be distracting. Other than that its a fine port with a better script so if you're playing on actual hardware then yeah go for it or if you just want a better localization.

>not counting their plug n play systems, Animal Crossing on the cube is the closest we ever got to Nintendo releasing a compilation of their older games in one physical package in the same way other companies like Konami, Midway, Capcom and Namco were doing in the 90s/2000s.

Makes me wish they could have packed even more in with that fact.

>> No.8598304

Nintendo has always been retarded with their back catalog.
The only time they've gotten it right was with the NES Classic and SNES Classic, but even those they cocked up with not making enough/not continuing to make it.

>> No.8598310

I was really hoping it was going to include some neat shit like Earthbound Beginnings or NWC1990 or done a top loader designed Classic 2 with more games.

>> No.8598323

>>8598310
Not including Earthbound Beginnings was a little bit of a blunder, or the original Fire Emblem now, but to me at the original price point, with how good the controller was the the game selection is pretty good.
Same with the SNES Classic, the selection on the classic is better than the selection on the NSO service, which is downright embarrassing.

You can spend one hour learning about all the differences

Some things are better on GBA but in general SNES is superior, screen is not zoomed in and there are no baffling voices for every movement. Unless you grew up with GBA you'll want SNES to be your first experience.

SNES games ported to GBA are always terrible, I have never seen an exception. Alttp might be the one of the earliest snes games that got a gba port, and even that is crap. There's just no way around the terrible resolution. Plus the sound is shitty and that's even before considering how they added retarded and totally unnecessary voices to Link.
