So I'm playing Dragon Quest II right now and trying to figure out why I should even bother continuing. I got to Alefgard and I just can't deal with this piece of crap.

Should I just stop and move on to 3?

The answer is always no. Nobody gives a fuck about these games, everybody calling them "classics" is full of shit. If it was classic it would be fun.
At least Dragon Warrior 1 is a bit interesting because of it's extremely simplified design with one character taking on all the roles of a typical RPG party. Not very fun to play, but you can see how the development of JRPGs began.

DQII is DQI in steroids, for better or for worst, simple mechanics and untested areas due to limited development time, heck is the only game Horii didn't finish before realease because they didn't have the time.
Always go with the remakes, in my humble opinion.
