I got a lot of use out of the Namco Museum on GCN/PS2/Xbox purely because they include the excellent Arrangement versions of most games in the set.

This shit was buggy as hell, both of the N64 games crashed regularly

>> No.8596390

It's weird that this took so long to really catch on as a thing. Namco arcade compilations were everywhere from the 5th gen onwards, and some SNES games got PS ports (those were hardly retro at the time though), but for the most part it seems like it took a while for companies to start tapping into the fact that there's still a market for old games. I probably spent almost as much time playing DK arcade on DK64 as I did playing actual DK64. I would have loved a Nintendo arcade compilation. Some of those games are only really now getting ported to home consoles, like arcade Punch Out.

i guess 6th gen is when development started to become a lot more streamlined and producing compilations of emulated games were more feasible. for example there was a Saturn compilation of the genesis Sonic games and they played the same from what I can tell but if I'm not mistaken they had to be ported the "old fashioned" way meaning they basically had to convert all the code to run natively, while the mega collection was actually full emulation of a genesis

I had Mega Collection Plus for PS2. For my birthday one year my dad brought me to EB Games and told me I could get any PS2 game that was $20 or below. For some reason it's always haunted me as a purchase, I already had Sonic 1-3 and 3D Blast for Genesis. Ended up feeling like kind of a redundant game to get.
When I bought an Xbox a few years ago, one of the games I got to fill out my collection was Mega Collection Plus, it's still the best Sonic game on the console

Called Sonic Mega Collection but doesn't include Sonic CD which sucked and there was that pain with unlocking games - like starting a game 20 times to unlock Sonic 3 & Knuckles. But I had some fun with that collection because a few years earlier before I got that game I had sold my original Mega Drive and with it all Sonic games.

What's interesting is Animal Crossing had like 20 NES games you could play, suggesting Nintendo had a fully functioning NES emulator for GC, and yet they barely took advantage of it.
Metroid Prime also had original Metroid as an unlockable.

that reminds me, didn't someone figure out that the ROMs in virtual console NES games had iNES headers meaning Nintendo just downloaded them from a typical rom site
not that they aren't within their rights to do that, but it's kind of funny to think Nintendo just went to romhustler or wherever everyone else pirates their shit for an official rerelease

I guess the GBA NES Classics series counts as 6th gen. In retrospect, strikes me as a ripoff. You probably could have put all of those games on one cartridge.

The framerate is a little rough, but the collection is definitely playable. Plus it actually fucking has Sonic 3 & Knuckles perfectly intact unlike modern compilations (though Sonic Origins is going to break that awful streak).
It's Sonic 1 on GBA that's notorious for being terrible.
