Or at least it would be a perfect game if it wasn't technically two games.

And yeah, it's actually 2 games that can combine.

crap game, you basically hold right to win. Sometimes you hold left because the game has earthworm jim level design.

And half the levels are boring as shit or just plain annoying.

sonic 2 was better, the only bad zone there was hill top.

Think of the possibilities if more games used lock on tech. Shame this was the only time it was implemented.

>> No.8590925

I could swear I had a copy of sonic and knuckles without the lockon feature. Just a plain cart. My mom gave it to me for Christmas. I still had it in 2005 or so but now I can't find it. Anybody else ever have one?

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the peak of video games.

This shows once again why Sega sucks and went under. They couldn't complete this garbage on time for their toy deal with McDonald's so they split the game into two pieces. Sega being greedy as normal.

Not really.
Sonic 1 had 6 zones, with 3 acts each. (18)
Sonic 2 had 10 zones, with 2 acts each. (20)
Sonic 3 had 6 zones, with 2 acts each. (12)
Sonic & Knuckles had 6 zones with 2 acts each. (12).

That's without even mentioning the fact it was originally supposed to be 1 game, but was split into 2 to make release in time for the holiday season.

this. half of s3's stages are complete dogshit and marble garden/carnival night back to back grinds the pacing to a complete halt. s&k keeps it going the entire time while its fewer gimmicks aren't nearly as awful or intrusive.

When I was a kid, I rented Sonic 3 all the time but I was given S&K for my birthday. I never once connected Sonic 3 to S&K, just Sonic 1 and 2.

Sonic 2 with Knuckles was just how Cybershell described it in one of his videos: "fucking magic". It blew my mind as a kid so I took a step back to consider why the lock-on cartridge even existed, never considering that Sonic 3 was only half a game and S&K the other half.

I finally played S3&K in the early 2000s with emulation only after I kept seeing people combine these two separate games on gaming forums, calling it the best Sonic game. I still think Sonic 2 is better tho, S3&K is too long imo which is why you get save features.

>> No.8594679

You do realize when people say 'hold right to win' they mean while doing nothing else. Your log of inputs is mostly comprised of jumping which outnumber right presses more than 6 to 1. Even if this was scientific in the slightest I hardly see how this proves your point.

There's one strange quirk of the &K portion of the game.
No underwater sections at all, not one. The bubble shield's air supply is only relevant in the S3 portion, and coincidentally in every zone except Marble Garden.

Another reason why &k > s3. Although I will say that Angel Island did it right. It had some water sections incorporated but it wasn't the main focus so it complimented the stage.

Oil Ocean is like a more forgiving but confusing version of Labyrinth Zone. The slides could be confusing if you go in blind.
Come to think of it, the slides in every Sonic game from 1-3K got more complex with each sequel
>Sonic 1 - Labyrinth
>Sonic 2 - Oil Ocean
>Sonic 3 - Ice Cap, Marble Garden
>Sonic & Knuckles - Sandopolis
Sandopolis Act 2 is one of those levels that might take 20 minutes to figure out if you go in blind, but once you know how the slides actually work it cuts the time down in half

I just find it to be kinda boring and tedious compared to most other stages. Plus a lot of stage gimmicks that make you wait, like the lifts and fans. I guess Metropolis has similar problems with the screws but I still like Metropolis a lot more

I think people get too hung up on the music and how novel it was to show Sonic snowboarding to judge Ice Cap Zone fairly. It's not really interesting in play.
