Model 1. Superior quality all around. Cheap and easy to repair/replace on the off chance that's required. Works with the widest range of addons. Imagine overpaying for a meme version, then overpaying when it breaks, and doing that a few more times until placement parts no longer exist.

Japanese early rev. Mega Drive because it's iconic and it has that big round bass

CDX because it's compact, solid, multifunction, and has crystal clear sound without sounding thin

I grew up with a Model 2, always thought the Model 1 looked “old” when I saw it. But I also had a Nomad when I got a bit older and that thing was so fucking dope, awful screen and absolutely no portability but so cool. I wish I still had it, could probably drop in an LCD panel or something.

This picture here is a great example of why Sega failed. Too man systems. They lost customer's confidence with all the bullshit they put out.

Not to mention the endless supply of bad shitty games. How many times can one company put trash out and people lap it up like a dog? Well Sega found out.

Then look at the evolution of Sega's controller. They get worse with each iteration that came out. The Master System's controller was okay. D-pad sucked. Then the Genesis's controller was awkwardly shaped and lacked enough buttons where they had to redo the controller. Then the Saturn's controller was even fucking wise believe it or not. The shoulder buttons didn't feel right and was hard to use. Other then that it was a.shitry Genesis controller. Then the analog Saturn controller was a look into the future. A look into the future of the worlds worst controller. The Dreamcast. What a piece of shit that was.

Its a nice machine. Lots of bells and whistles like karaoke functions, native S-video and a very fun quirk that the top loading disc tray is motorized so you can make it open and close from the menu. It might have the best sound of all the revisions. The Victor model came first but I think the Sega one looks better. They cheapified it a bit for the Wondermega 2 and then cheapified it even more for the American release as the JVC X'Eye.

Nomad, though I do wish the headphone audio was the more balanced output of the better model 1s or the CD units. The nomad, the CDX, and a few other models I had over the years pump out ridiculously high bass that just sounds absurd (and ruins some soundtracks).

That said, nothing is cooler than a portable mega drive.

A handheld MD that was distributed for use on Japanese airlines, some of the jets would have television screens for the passengers and you could use the mega jet in flight as a courtesy of the airline. I don't know a lot of concrete details though as I haven't tried digging into Japanese articles about it.

It was also part of development that led to the nomad, as a mega jet is basically a nomad without screen.

Perfect if you have one in good condition. The aux out is as clean as it gets, but the headphone jack sounds good too. It actually has 3 methods of sound output, so that also might be why you've heard mixed reports

I remember seeing a Sega CDX in a department store on display, back in the day. I remember it being priced at about $400.00 Canadian. The machine has a compartment for two AA batteries, if I remember correctly. Like Sega thought you could use it as a portable CD device. Which made it one of the most expensive portable CD players of its day. I'd just imagine someone taking it to the beach to listen to music, and just getting it filled with sand or stepped on by accident.

That's exactly why it flopped. If it were priced competitively it could have worked but it came out relatively late and anyone interested would have been able to buy a Genesis and Sega CD combined for less money. So really you'd be paying a premium just for the small form factor. It was way too expensive to use as a portable CD player and was actually too big for that anyway even at the time. A typical discman was a fraction of the size and weight.

I think it may have launched at about $500.00 canadian, but I think I saw it "on sale" for about $100 dollars cheaper. But it did launch at 399.99 in 1994. At that point Genesis Model 2's were getting to be under $100 dollars, but the Sega CD attachment was still about $250.99 - $299.99 (US), so I think a Model 2 Genesis and Sega CD Model 2 would have been a little cheaper? It's a cool design, and some nice engineering, though. It was a ridiculous selling point to sell it as a 'portable CD player" in 1994. A Sony Discman was a whole lot cheaper, and so were the other portable Cd players. A small 'boom box' with a CD player and a tape deck could go for less than $100.00 in 1994.

It's funny. Back then there was a corner of the electronics market that appealed to yuppies. All the high end electronics like Laserdisc players and stereo systems had this...I guess you could say "weight" to it, both literal and figurative. Big heavy knobs and shit that screamed "this is expensive." Fucking Mr. Dink from Doug. Sega pretty much never said no to shoving a Genesis in anything that could appeal to this market. Like who was going to buy a Wondermega or CDX except someone with $$$? In some ways I'm a bit jealous that we don't really have that today. I was too young back then to take advantage of all these nifty fringe versions of the consoles but now that I have a real job and some disposable income there's really no equivalent. Nowadays every game just gets a $150 premium box filled with useless garbage. Nothing cool like a LaserActive.

Not amazing at all. The number of ways to do something is irrelevant. What matters is their availability and the demand for them. There weren't a lot of these made, in total. There are a lot less around today because they break easily so were often thrown away. Because of that or because they were old, and taking up a lot of space in some cases, or just because the games were shit.
Now they're memes and highly sought after by bandwagoners, of which there are more in existence than available units. That's why they're expensive.

It probably would have been too late in the Sega CD's life for a 32x combo unit. The 32x was released in December 1994 here in North America, and the Saturn was released in May 1995. The early launch of the Sega Saturn killed the 32x in the western market, as retailers were selling the add-on at a heavily discounted price to move inventory out. The Sega CD was officially discontinued in 1996.
