Its even more annoying because we now know "Mario Usa" was basically going to be mario 2 all along in the spirit of it being designed as a vertical platformer what SMB did for horizontal, even if it would never have actually featured mario in it (sort of like Zelda started out featuring mario) if anything, the doki skin is the "reskin", since it was literally a property thrown on to an in-work project and released on a budget platform while the final, real-deal was fleshed out and given the mario treatment to make it actually sell. And Lost Levels/Smb was really just tossed out as a cheap expansion pack of sorts. It doesn't feel like a "Nintendo style" sequel, closest would be Mario Galaxy 2 as a expansion of a first game with unused ideas.

Doki Doki Panic was likely a prototype for Mario 3 at one point, but it was never really intended to be the "real Mario 2", as much as Wikipedos will try to misconstrue statements from the developers, since the Japanese Mario 2 (Lost Levels) was already a thing when Doki Doki Panic was made.

Mario 2/Lost Levels was the straight sequel/more content release of the first game while the vertical platformer prototype was the true "succesor" sequel being worked on to the original game in the same way Zelda 2 took a huge departure from the original in them trying something new.

Like I said, Mario Galaxy 2 was modern FDS Mario 2 where as Galaxy 1 was the successor to Mario 64 and Sunshine. Every main Nintendo developed "sequel" is like that.

Knowing Nintendo's experience with Popeye, and Judging by the quality and scale of Doki Doki Panic, I refuse to believe that it was only made to serve as a one-time Fuji TV event and then fade into obscurity.

DD2 is one of my favorite games of all time, DD1 is cool in an arcade sort of way, but DD3 sadly did not work out. it has cool ideas in there, like switching characters, different moves/weapons, and some of the aesthetics are cool. but really, the enemies are a broken grindfest. they're too hard until you crack their pattern, then they're just tedious. the execution of the game made it shitty.
