I'm calling "Made Away Themselves" done, but there's always room for improvement. Thanks to Anon for the playtesting and finding skips. I've (mostly) eliminated them and have tweaked a few things to improve gameplay.

Got a public release for my DIY entry. The map name is called Checksum. Make sure you load it with the DIY_resources_v1.5 wad from here: https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/126692-cp-doom-it-yourself-diy-get-imaginative-with-bold-colors/
Also make sure you're using a port that supports MBF21. All feedback is appreciated. This map is basically me unleashing my stream of consciousness into virtual form. So each room is completely different from one another. Whatever idea popped into my head I mapped it and moved onto the next. If things seem weird then that's why. Ammo and enemy spawns are probably fucked in some spots so please give me any suggestions you might have.

I've played through the campaigns, and also finished a megawad with it as iwad (Icarus alien vanguard) to mix things up
The later enemies (cyberdemon, spider mastermind) are unfinished, others are low quality (archvile, revenant) but the lower enemies being insectoids and the worm demon are pretty neat and the textures, sounds and weapons are good enough (though the weapons sound a bit too soft but you get used to it). Level design is pretty good.

I'm stuck at Descent 2's Level 16.
Who the fuck though that making an invisible, immune to all but one weapon, teleporting, homing nuke firing, flashbanging, robot spawning, tanky piece of shit as a mid-game boss was a good idea.
And if you die, you lose all of your weapons in the same room as him so you have to avoid his bullshit for long enough to resupply and try to take him down.
I definitely like the first game better.
Better textures, better/ more music, better enemies, better balance.

Strictly because it had code to force it to not be playable in GZDoom, because it hard crashed from the third map onwards in GZDoom, which is why Graf and Rachael lost their shit over it despite it being an incredibly unique situation and the ZDoom forums claiming to welcome mods for source ports that aren't GZDoom.

Excellent map anon. Your layout and detailing is top notch, the remixed "Into the Beasts Belly" fits nicely as well.

Now for my criticisms, you put way too many hell knights / pinkies after the first red door. I ended up triggering them all and funneling them through said door into the circular corridor. The blue key fight is fucking nuts, nice job but I can't imagine beating it without the secret invulnerability.

Everyone likes the rocket launcher, but the lack of weapon variety (for most of the map) is noticed. The lava platforms that make lift noises are a bit silly as well. The teleporting archvile section became fucking aggravating after 5 minutes and the rest kinda devolved into slaughter after that. It also took much longer than anticipated to complete because I suck at doom.

Now, the Perdition's Gate we got is because it was finished by someone else, but if you look at Tom Mustaine's own levels in that set (and in TNT), they're really very uninspired, samey, and dull. As I said, I'm still kind of learning the ropes on gitting gud at Doom, so may not be the best. I also am going for 100% kills which is why you may see me backtrack inexplicably for some reason, I'm not lost, the map was pretty easy to understand.

Overall, I enjoyed the level. Had the most trouble in the arachnotron room but that's because I was likely trying to rush straight into it and then just dodge my way into surviving. Fell a few times into the pits on the side, would be cool if there was a way up so you'd get majorly punished by having to run around outside and take lots of damage but not necessarily be doomed to die and restart. As I said, I'm not very experienced in Doom WADs in general so maybe some other Anons can watch the playthrough and comment what they thought of the map's aesthetics and such.

The pinky/hellknight squeeze is simultaneous. THere's an offscreen voodoo doll that triggers it. Ideally, you die to it once because you focus on the hellknights, and then get trapped by the pinkies. Congrats on finding an alternate way to beat that fight. However, it's possible to win that fight and take nearly no damage by simply turning around and prioritizing the pinkies first.

The blue key fight is absolutely beatable without secrets. It's just meant to be hard, but the secret invuln makes the fight trivial if you can find it.

The archvile go round is manageable. In the room right before it I teach you exactly what happens when you blow up a barrel. Don't blow up too many barrels.

Also, the map is themed around Suicide. Hence you only get a rocket launcher. I'm glad you enjoyed the map and thank you for playing it.

AVP1999\2000 is fucking amazing. Compared to other fps of the era the movement was really great especially when you got the bonus levels and extra movement options.

Every single species felt different and tense, Marine campaign was scary as fuck, Predator was tense but once you knew what to do you felt bad ass. ANd ALien was really well, alien, no other game had done wall hugging like that .


Monolith avp 2 is cool but a much more story centred and linear game.

I feel like the maximum resolution to play these old shooters is 640x480. Anything more and the mood is ruined when it becomes painfully obvious that everything is very flat floors and walls with very small textures applied. At lower resolutions the lack of observable detail helps you to see the textures as real surfaces instead of flat wallpapers.

Yep. It's more or less about having total control of your slippery marine than anything else. Enemy awareness is important but being able to slide through enemies and guiding projectiles is the most important thing when trying to stay alive.
For myself at least, I never realized how fucking shitty most of my movements were until I compared demos that I recorded. My 2-shot BFG the Cyber movements looks like fucking trash in earlier demos in comparison to what I can do now. Being aware of my surroundings when guiding missiles into walls was something I was horrible at too at a point. Realizing how much space you have before you collide and get stuck on something is another crucial thing you will learn to pick up. The distance where autoaim drops off will be picked up naturally, and you'll learn to resist freezing if you get a red screen and you'll just keep moving.
Doom is basically one super fucked up game of dodgeball where you can't solve the puzzle unless you have the movements locked down. RNG for sure is always a factor, but at some point you'll man up and realize that it's more than likely your fault but I might be saying that part because the game might have mindbroke me.

Honestly if you're used to the modern GZDoom source port stuff, you should still try playing on a low 4:3 resolution with the original software renderer and mouselook turned off now and then if you haven't. It really does have a great charm to it, especially in more classically themed WADs.

It kinda sucks not having the OG 1990s connection to Doom a lot of people seem to have. I started playing around ~2007 (pic related was my first version for a short time actually) so I can't really connect with the chocolateDoom crowd but I really don't like the nuDoom series either.

Ultradetailed stuff like Eviternity, Fractured Worlds, Heartland and new Sunder maps look better with bit higher resolution, but I agree that old wads should be played with low res. Also most old custom textures are made for software mode and look very ugly and underdetailed with more colors. The issue that a lot of shitty mappers have is that they're very capable of creating good, fun encounters and interesting levels, but they lack the proper THEORY of good level design to avoid doing stupid shit like that. They think that if something is unfair, then that just makes it "harder", and that having an extreme difficulty is very desirable. These people have no idea what they're doing and so it results in a lot of wads being straight up unfun to a few people.
It's not even an invalid way to design your levels, it just shouldn't be the standard for what's normal.

Being invisible actually forces enemies to wander around searching for you, even if they were previously alerted. It's great for traveling open areas without fear of being shot by distant enemies or escaping ambushes to approach from a better angle. Stardate20x7 finale with spawning random arch-viles with massive group of all kinds of enemies (except masterminds and afrits) is a good fun. You basically have to find arch-viles first, while also reducing the mass of other demons before getting overwhelmed. It's very challenging for sure, but it never felt impossible or frustrating. I loved it. So do many others as Ribbiks is one of the most revered mappers. You are quite alone with your opinion. Also when playing challenging wad, it's not usually smart doing a blind playthrough. You are still practicing it's hard encounters, so you are supposed to die, die and die. Just save before battle, if you aren't ready to plan a strategy on a go. Stop complaining about hard wads, while you are obviously not even near ready to play them saveless. Doom is the way to go. Now you just have to decide do want to start with modern wads or chronologically from 90s classics. If you go to modern stuff Scythe 2, Skillsaw's wads or btsx series are good place to start. Keep in mind that these are way harder than originals, so it would be retarded to go saveless uv before getting familiar with modern combat. If you are going chronologically from 90s, Final Doom and Memento Moris are good starting point.

I reworked my test chamber to stick closer to the alpha style and also mixed in the wormhole skybox opening at the top from the beta test chamber. The idea here is that initially there is machinery to create the portal, and then when the portal 'opens' it's just hiding the machinery which is a big func_brush and a couple of func_rotating.
Not compiled or lit yet since I actually want to start building out the rest of the level leading to it first so I can then start on a first pass of the post disaster state/gameplay.

Paradise would be closest thing to this, if you are not allergic to gzdoom. New arsenal and Skillsaw influenced map and combat design like in Antaresian Relinquary. Hell-Forged also has new arsenal, but it has much more larger and adventurous maps with use of portals. There is also Antares' earlier megawad Struggle: Antaresian Legacy. Antares also contributed maps to Micro Slaughter CP, which is a very fun wad. Rowdy Rudy 2 has also new dehacked arsenal. I'd also like to recommend Preacher. New weapons in it are merely cosmetic, but it has really cool map design and gameplay.

I considered making something like this but there's really no benefit to using it over doom. The chex engine is almost identical to the doom1 engine save for a few things, the changes are quite lazy really.
The unaltered data for many doom1 things still exists even though they never show up in game. This means you can still use berserk, barrels, cacodemons and cyberdemons but the sprites are invisible by default. The enemies that do show up in game are just slightly broken doom enemies. Rather than giving the zombie enemies an actual melee attack they just designated their hitscan as melee so you can't really bait them. The boss wall from chex quest is just a baron with a fat hitbox and 0 speed. They also made lost souls have 0 height for some reason. You can view the exact changes in the "chex.deh" file sourceports use to emulate chex.
