Is it weird that I love the first Metal Gear but can't get into the sequel?

I could never get into either. It's been a few years so I should give it another shot.

It's a bit unusual, considering most MGSfags tend to find Metal Gear 1 a bit too archaic, while Metal Gear 2 is much closer to MGS1. I like both to be honest, but I can see why MGSfags might find the minimalist storytelling to be archaic compared to Metal Gear 2, which throws in a lot of "conversation demos" during key moments of the game. I find Metal Gear 1's storytelling approach the closest to MGSV, which I thought had a very minimalist presentation as well.

I agree actually, MG 1 has swifter controls, it's like playing any other arcade-style adventure game like Zelda but with some stealth and espionage stuff.
MG2 is sluggish in controls, has more options but is more annoying in its design, overall I didn't enjoy it as much as MG 1.
I did like both better than MGS though.

I'm in the same boat, anon. I started with MG1 and then couldn't get into 2, so skipped to MGS.
I really enjoyed how it didn't have many dialogues and was just cryptic enough

where you at MSXchads

I will guess its because it is less story focused. MG2 due to all the retcons might not sit as well for a newer player who will not have attachment to the game. I prefer MG2 though its a much better game. MG1 is still good though.

kinda, how did you play it?
I loved the second one more than the first

They're all fucking awful storyshit pseudogames with terrible controls. Old MG games included for every platform.

I played it a bunch until I realized pc games were more fun back then

Still great visuals and gameplay

MG1 is a product of its time, but it's good.
MG2 is shit. Too slow, the screen is too cluttered, it's not playable.

I completely agree, I couldn't get into it either. I feel like it was too ambitious for it's hardware. Giving enemies 45° vision was a massive mistake.
I've tried 3 times to get into it and it's just too annoying. 1 was at least fun.

>Too slow
play it on Turbo-R like it was clearly meant to be played

You're not allowed to call yourself an MSXchad if you only played the MSX Metal Gears and not the rest of Konami's MSX output. That includes the Gradius games (including Salamander), Space Manbow, the Knightmare trilogy, Treasure of Usas, Snatcher & SD Snatcher, Vampire Killer (aka the original Castlevania), Goonies, King Kong II, King's Valley I & II, ect. Okay, you can skip the MSX Contra.

I'm playing it for the first time right now. It's not bad so far except the ENDLESS cutscenes and codec calls. Getting pretty bored of running around Big Shell aswell, I'm starting to get the feeling the entire game takes place here. Which would be disappointing.

We're talking about the original 2D Metal Gears, not MGS1 and 2.

Are MG2 guards the smartest they've ever been in the series?

Played both on Subsistence over a decade ago but only now trying to beat it on openMSX. I think I'm getting the hang of it (reached the north building after the Hind D), it's just difficult getting used to the enemies behavior and paying attention to the radar at all times. Will replay Ghost Babel someday to see if I have the same problem.

yeah but are you playing it on the turbo-r machine with a higher clock rate?

MGSV's whole deal was minimalist storytelling, as far as I can tell it was a response from Kojima to everyone saying they hated all the cutscenes in MGS4.

The difference between it and MG1 is that MG1 had the minimalist storytelling because of actual limitations, whereas it was a choice in MGSV.

I think the guard A.I. in MGS2 is probably a bit smarter.

There's an interview from when Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake came out where they said they wanted to include "demos" (e.g. cutscenes) in Metal Gear 1, but they couldn't due to ROM size constraints.
