i don't even know if its a liminal space or not but some of the overworld maps from Spyro 2 makes me feel kind of unsettled
i guess i was used to Spyro 1 overworlds, which were full of enemies, npc, collectables, etc, just things to do baskcally, they were full of life.
on the other hand the overworlds on Spyro 2 are so empty
there's no enemies, no Npc, just some gems to collect and the portals
and even tho they are empty as fuck they still are pretty damn big

The term and the feeling is 100% an eye of the beholder kind of thing. For me personally its a nostalgic feeling without ever actually being there. I'm too old to care about this liminal meme but loading multiplayer maps offline and walking alone inside them without other players or bots just to explore always game me this weird feeling of unnatural loneliness long before the meme so I get what it means. It's places that should be full of people but are empty. Like those Bermuda triangle stories about ships where the crew disappeared but the ship and habitable quarters were left behind untouched, sometimes with stuff like food on plates as if everybody left in a hurry.

The word 'liminal' originates from the Latin word 'limen,' which means threshold. In a literary sense, it's the time in a story after the beginning of the climax and before the end of the climax, usually characterized by a sense of ambiguity and inertia. Think of it as the moment of perfect bliss that you achieve at the top of an orgasm, when your mind is cleared of all thoughts. That's what liminal means.

There is absolutely some psychological importance to what the internet is calling liminal spaces that reflects some unconscious way we process the world.
Before my grandfather died, he was in a coma, and I had this dream where he was saying goodbye and saying he was better than ever and he was going to travel.
I arrived in his house to talk to him in the dream, he was there waiting for me, and the house was completely empty, no chairs, tables, TV, furniture, only the walls, floor and ceiling.
Pic related, a very conscious design choice, in a movie about loneliness and isolation and empty spaces that should be full of people, from before the internet.

A staple of horror, the empty dining room table, as I said before, also a staple of Bermuda triangle stories about empty ships. And the introduction of the game is a transition into Sora's heart through dreams and and transition to the beginning of the game. It's just empty stained glass in a void.

Later on in the series through sleep you end up in a very liminal place that's literally just sky and water where people transition into but it's not really retro.

Also the music adds to these places so much. The theme here is used in the End of the World.

And KH1s secret ending and KH2 and more have Dark City. Which as a secret ending transitions into KH2 and in KH2 transitions into the end of the game like >>8590160

This might be the best example because it evokes nostalgia due to the princesses.

You are correct.
Calling liminal things that aren't liminal makes no sense. Just invent another word. The concept of liminal is well established and it's specific. Why change it? We need a word for real liminal spaces after all.

I always found the Molag Mar waistworks in Morrowind strange. By the time you see them you've been to Vivec and seen many waistworks full of npcs. You arrive in Molag Mar and they are deserted. Tables set but no one around. The lighting is much darker and flickery. It really sets the mood for the kind of place Molag Mar is. An outpost on the edge of a rough land.

Should probably be referred to as tension/apprehension inducing areas. That's what happens when you consume too much media that relies on transitive formulas to move from one state to another. There's always a moment in a movie when you know the characters are going to kiss, when the monster is going to pop out of the casket, or when a character is going to die because he said he would come back. We're good at identifying patterns and drawing conclusion. You recognize elements and you have a pretty good idea of what the outcome will be.
Empty spaces with faint noise? There's a jump scare waiting! Spooky.

Well, no.
If the Romans were around they 100% would go all Brutus on your ass for butchering their language and culture.
As long as I remember the original meaning of the word and can tell faggots off for misusing it, the meaning hasn't really changed.

Daedalus Tower always struck me as kind of backrooms-like, I think it's because of those decrepit stone looking walls combined with that bright red floor which seems somewhat out of place. My brain always interprets it as being carpeting, which doesn't really fit in a dungeon like this, but nonetheless every time I go through here I imagine I'm going through some dim underground stone dungeon with red carpeting.
