it's not unique inside either and the data itself is still floating around the hellscape we call the internet, you can get it anytime you want

Y'all laughing now but you wouldn't be inclined if you knew what horrors awaited you. The great Miyamoto-san prophesied the great cleansing, during the console wars of the 90s he spoke of the rise of the fake fans that would litter the gaming collective. Here you are, the non-nintenlievers thinking you have somehow won the war when in reality it was just the battle. To think someone would be so foolish to believe in false prophets like Bernie, Kutaragi, and Phil. Its blasphemy, you need to join us before it to late because what nintendon't do is steal your soul. Miyamoto-san is all forgiving and will accept you for who you are if you just turn over 10% of your paychecks to Nintendo. Hurry before the cleansing occurs.

I actually play them.
I have about 30 NES games, try to get licensed stuff that will never be made officially available again (like Ducktales, TMNT, Jackie Chan’s action Kung Fu, etc.). the rest are just the classic must haves, original carts I had as a kid, personal favorites or stuff ppl just give me. I’d like to get an Everdrive at some point though for stuff that’s prohibitively expensive (like Bonk’s Adventure or Mighty Final Fight).

After 25 years of buying the newest console and games, the push for digital media, mandatory installs, updates, dlc, micro transactions and internet dependent games drove me to give up on the next generation from here on out. I’ve gone back to older consoles, primarily the PS2 for exactly that reason. I want an easy, pick up and play experience and the enjoyment of having the game in hand, the box art, having it on the shelf and knowing it’ll work every time.
I don’t see anything new ever giving us an experience like that again. Retro games and consoles will only become more valuable because of that. And fortunately, there’s many to choose from with huge libraries of games I’ve never played and many I’d be happy to play again.

Who cares? Why I should care if I can run games better than your authentic bullcrap?
And hecc - arguably you're fucking wrong because in last few years emulation for most of retro consoles got extremely accurate. So unless you are one of these weirdos that gets a hard on when they blow into cartridge (which is not gaming and I'm pretty sure you can 3D print fake NES cartridge for the same experience), there's no reason to downplay emulation.

Your ancient, overpriced pieces of plastic are literally disappearing from this planet as this thread shows, emulation is the only sure way to preserve games.

Well im not going to confirm if im older or younger then you, but I will say im old enough that the systems and games I purchased were gotten far below their original sale value, heck I got a few of them for nothing because the previous owners didn't want them anymore. It sure was a nice era when people could enjoy the hobby on a small budget, even children could get into it easy! >ignorance of when people would collect systems and games long forgotten by the general public, finding unique experiences they never got to play in an era before the internet was mainstream

Just because you need to spend some money on doesn't make it cringe. It was excavation and discovery for the common person, same with books, movies or comics. Its why certain games became popular in the first place that would have been forgotten. It was one of the key reasons retro gaming was ever even a thing: buying the old toys other people no longer played.

I could partially see the argument that its more just consuming for the sake of it, because the unknowns are now widely known. But any collecting that is in the form of acquiring knowledge of the unique or the unknown is the same category.

For most stuff, yeah. But there is still the potential for knowledge accumulation in a sense. Something like Earthbound has been fucked inside and out by people dissecting its design and ranting about the creators intended "meaning", but you still have the possibility to stumble upon an obscure game only released in a certain region or undocumented or only lightly "disected" by those aware of it. Now I have a closet full of games and a flashcart for each system hooked up at all times. I have no urge to sell my collection but I am not actively looking for anything to add to it.
