Funny you make this thread. I've been playing through the Sakura Wars games these past two weeks, and I'm now on Sakura Wars 3. Definitely the best SW game yet; just like SW2 improved on the first in every way, SW3 improves on the previous two games in every way.

Playing on actual hardware, since emulating SW3 with upscaling gave me weird lines.

Is it really worth it? I made a thread about Far East of Eden yesterday. I think it at Sakura are the only JRPG series that I missed and they're apparently very good. I played most of the games/series because I grew up when the 16 and 32 bit era was still in stores, but Sakura and FEoE weren't sold in the US so I missed out, but always saw it in magazines and in forums.

You're going to be playing these games for the characters and cool setting, not the gameplay if you're wondering.

SW1-2 strategy parts are easy grid based and are mostly padding for the visuyal novel parts which are more important.

SW3-5 strategy parts are proto-Valkyria Chronicles, there better but not as fun as it is in VC but it is a early look of what will eventually be a fun gameplay mechanic in the future

Good game. Had some missteps but nothing fatal, and the free-roam section is amazing so that helps make up for it. I like how you can score points with the townspeople in this one. A good way to go "hey, Ogami isn't inside the theater all day and actually sees how nice the place he's protecting is this time"

Which is a shame, because I think the late 2010's-now would've been a good time to re-release the original 4 games. SEGA didn't release them in the West back then because they didn't think there was a market, but I think there's much more of a market for them now.

Honestly, they shouldn't have bothered with the new game, and instead should've re-released 1-4 (Dreamcast versions) on PC or something.

just finished playing this game a couple weeks ago. What a fucking blast. I didn't think it was possible for me to enjoy a game this much. I can only hope for someone to one day release a translation just so I don't have to reference an old gamefaqss guide, and so many more people will be willing to try it out.

Is Dreamcast the best version for these series? I remember downloading the PC versions some time ago but they were kind of awful, patching them for Windows 10 was impossible.

For the first two games, yeah the Dreamcast versions are the best, but only the original Saturn release of the first game is English translated.

Sakura Wars 3 is available on Dreamcast and PS2; the PS2 version seems to emulate fine, but Dreamcast emulation is going to be more reliable.

Sakura Wars 4 is only available on Dreamcast, and Sakura Wars 5 was a PS2/Wii release.

Playing 1-4 on Dreamcast allows you to transfer your completion data across each game. So if you picked a favorite girl in previous games, the newer ones will keep track of it.
