Good JRPGs have organic mechanical progression. Earthbound is just grinding grinding grinding with the shittiest battle system ever

So this board is just a constant stream of bait threads right? I'm surprised there isn't another FF4 is bad thread.

>> No.8570360

I personally find grinding to be fun, especially with a fun battle system. Earthbound's battle system isn't the greatest, but its fast and simple. If you don't want a game where you have to grind, go play an easier game that holds your hand.

Earthbound takes very little, if any, grinding. The game isn't just highly regarded because it's goofy, it's a legitimately well balanced and fun game

Earthbound requires grinding at exactly 1 point in the game, which is the very beginning before you fight the first boss in Onett, after that you never have to grind again. Earthbound's explicit LACK of grind is the exact thing I praise the most about it and wish other JRPGs imitated, especially things like enemies running away from you when you beat the area boss and auto-killing enemies that are too low level so revisiting areas is never annoying.

There are small things you'll appreciate more from experience, like the tension of trying to hurry up and give someone a potion while their HP is counting down to their inevitable death.

Earthbounds biggest fans have never played it, only read about it in fake gay greentext stories and internet creepy pasta videos. The novelty of a "nintendo rpg" refuses the truth that it's just not a fun game. The advertising for the game being "this game is shit" was just honesty.

>>8570601
it counts down too fast for it to matter, the only time the game really tests it is the handful of self destructing enemies. Mother 3 balanced it far better.

no and i guess I'll never find out because i beat the game without knowing it and at no point did i felt pressed to look into it and the game just isn't good enough to replay

early in the game i agree, but it becomes a good mechanic later in the game when you have more hp and enemies are dealing more

I'm so glad almost nobody talks about Earthbound anymore. It used to be the internet darling game with whole fan sites and shit built around it and it was on every list of the best games ever and now it feels like most people have just forgotten it because now that it's easily accessible you don't get any le epic nerd points for having played it.

Have you ever considered the possibility that people have different tastes? I know this is hard for 4chan autists to understand, but you personally disliking a game does not prove that the game sucks.

>> No.8570864

>>8570854
the amount of a game mechanic required to play a game is not a mattr of taste, moron. That's like saying "Actually I don't believe this game has sprites in it. I decided it does not based on my experience."

>Ugly and lazy sprite work
- Almost no cohesive thought put into enemies
- These are found in the same area:
- A lot of the designs are very sloppy

>Awful difficulty spikes
- New areas produce powerful enemies and promote grinding
- Some areas, like the Dept. Store in Foursome, have annoying difficulty spikes

>Tragic Status ailments
- Many of Earthbound's status ailments are poorly implemented
- Enemies tend to spam statuses like crying, poison, or cold.
- The worst status/gameplay mechanic is arguably "homesickness."
- Homesickness is unpredictable and can be detrimental if it occurs during a boss fight.
- The mushroom status ailment is another annoying part of the game.

>The story is ridiculous
- The more Earthbound goes on, the more absurd it becomes.
- Earthbound could have been great farce, but it seems more "made up as you go" since it tries to take itself serious at times.

>The game does not flow well
- Earthbound is plagued with numerous things that break its pacing.
- The annoying delay of the camera man, switching character perspectives, deaths from difficulty spikes, enemies rushing to initiate battles, backtracking...amongst other things.

I am not surprised Earthbound was a flop when it released, and I am also not surprised Nintendo refused to release Mother 3 outside of Japan. While Earthbound is charming at times, it is still a terrible game, and if this is what Itoi was going for... yikes.

>Tragic Status ailments
If you could carry more than three items or if they stacked this wouldn't be so bad but it ruins a lot of the game. You have to have a super expensive spell to cast constantly and immediately run out of PP or walk all the way back to a hospital and redo whatever dungeon you're in over and over

>well balanced
The early game is greatly unbalanced, especially Peaceful Rest Valley, and the difficulty spikes quite sharply during the Fourside Department Store segment.
