Not just CRPG - I'm putting it up against consoles as well, and it clearly comes out ahead.

It introduced many things which later became standard in open world games, such as NPC schedules.

It's certainly one of them. Without Ultima VII, we wouldn't have The Elder Scrolls, Divinity, or Gothic.

One thing that later game makers didn't really copy was the virtues. It's enough in most RPGs to simply defeat the enemies, in Ultima VII (as in earlier games starting with IV) you should also aspire to be a moral person.

I haven't ever played it but my buddy had it and it seemed extremely half-baked compared to the computer version which I had. I had a 486 with 16MB RAM at the time so I could actually play the game.

It's a good compromise between top-down for maximum viewable area on-screen, and isometric which gives you that nice 3D effect and brings the game world alive.

>> No.8563550

Also sadly Ultima VII (and the expansions) was the last game of the entire series which was produced and finished according to only Origin's timeline. By the time development on Serpent Isle was underway the acquisition by EA was complete and they demanded the game be finished in half the time they had originally allotted. And this started a trend, 8 was rushed to the point that there was almost no actual playtesting, and eventually it was fixed by patching which, in those days, was considered embarrassing and a type of failure that your game was so bad it needed a patch or else you couldn't complete it. IX was even worse, it crashed on literally most of the GPUs on the market on LAUNCH and it was almost three months before a patch was released which fixed that issue, but the game was not only notoriously buggy but also notoriously unfinished. Eventually members of the original UIX team produced an unofficial patch which fixed some of the plot but the engine itself was a shabby mess and it remains buggy as fuck until today.

Also, the endless platform riding.

All those murders don't happen in SNES.
They are all kidnapped.
I had a 486 DX-33 with 4 (or 8) MB RAM and it run well.
I first tried it in my old 286 and it's sluggish.
