What are some games that filtered you as a kid? Pic related for me, I'd start it and never get passed the beginning section. Actually I haven't tried it since, is it worth it?

The starting jungle sucks, and really exists just to filter rental players. Once you get past that, everything up until the end is good cinematic platformer action fun. The ending area is full of bullshit, but I can't think of many cinematic platformers that aren't bullshit in the final areas.
So 80% good fun, 10% drawn out filter, 10% alien-rape-fest with timed escape.

Mega Man 2 for me. It wasn't the lasers. It wasn't the vanishing/appearing blocks. No. I got filtered by the fucking Dragon in the Wily stages. Why? Because I kept trying to fight him before his health bar even appeared. I thought you were supposed to kill him while you ran away. So I'd try to shoot at him while running, and kept falling off to my death. Years later I came back to it, and just kept running while getting ready to fight. Suddenly the screen stops scrolling, and his health bar appears. I had to pause to rage at my younger self.

That's odd, I completely sucked at platforming games but I loved that one as a kid and it was one of the first games I ever beat. It's just more methodical and constrained but once you get it it plays very naturally without the obtuse guesswork of Another World for example.

It's a shame the "Flashback" story concept only lasts one level though. Finding little pieces of your identity would have made for a much more interesting story than the eighties blockbuster scifi mashup they went with

It's the best adventure platformer game ever made. Absolutely flawless. I prefer playing it on a keyboard though, try the Amiga version with a hard drive, the best version of all of them.

I love FB, but the first two Oddworld games are without a doubt the subgenre at its peak.

I just couldn't do the wall jumps

They threw Total Recall, They Live and Alien in a blender and made it play like Prince of Persia. It's one of the greatest adventure games of that era

It's even more fun when you replay it using the run-through-walls trick

Don't forget The Running Man (an entire level based on that) and a touch of Blade Runner

Very worth it. It's like a better Another World.
It's not super hard either, probably just your stupid kid mind got you.

I figured out enough to reach the pirate level but never quite grasped what I was supposed to do so the orbs would appear. It just felt random to me.

I didn't get very far. I just didn't know what to do.
I imagine it'd now more difficult to get working on a modern PC than it would to actually beat it.

But enough yelp reviews of your dick, we're discussing great cinematic platformers here.
