just finishing up playing the Dragon Quest 1-3 and I want to continue the franchise in order. I played the snes remakes of 1-3 since they were recommended to be the best way to play those games. (they definitely are after having played them, especially 3)

What is the best way to experience DQ 4-6? Should I play the originals, the PS1/2 remakes, or the remakes on the DS?

>> No.8559684

IV on mobile includes the cut party talk content but it's not exactly a deal-breaker. Play them all on DS.

I heard about that. Is there a patch that fixes it or a fan translation of the japanese version? if so I might just use that and play the DS versions of the games via melonDS

he got confused by the OP image. probably refering to the switch ports of 1-3 which are just the crappy mobile ports ported to the switch.

They are indeed very ugly. They have mixels and pixel art combined with raster images all topped with a gross UI font.

I really liked the PS2 version of V.

4 = phone version.
5 = I dunno, I only played SNES version. I hear DS version is better but there's also a nice looking PS2 version.
6 = DS version.

With DQ, there's literally never a reason to play the originals. But it's also not always a good idea to play the most current release either.

6 is probably the most beautiful of all the retro DQ original releases

The hell is a mixel?

I think the port of DQ3 looks alright since it's more zoomed out. Still not good. But not as bad as DQI+II The main issue I think is the super chunky environment pixels and the really small and fine pixels on the character art. It clashes terribly. I think the battles look fine, personally speaking.

I don't know. The 7 remake, while objectively better, took away some of the tedious charm of the OG. Though I will say if forced to replay either of them, I'd choose 7DS

Its a term to describe when the sizes of pixels is inconsistent.

this is exactly what Mixels is

Ohh. I personally don't mind the looks as much but I fully get the distaste for it. I like stuff like the monster and battle background though, the backgrounds specially look very nice. I do wish they had a toggle for at least the mobile sprites though, specially for 1 and 2. I'm not the biggest fan of how SNES 1, 2, and 5 look, so I do appreciate that the mobile versions make them more like SNES 3 and 6.

The DS version has the most content and a new wife to choose to have your destined hero children, who also happens to be be far the best girl.

PS2 has full 3D and some of the extra content

The fake britfaggotry is tolerable but the fake russian and fake french (?) accents in 4 were just unreadable.

4-6 DS and 7-8 3DS, I'm a major SNESfag but I must admit 4-6 is far better on the DS and they came out before the SNES DQ3 remake and have a pretty basic presentation compared to it and the comfy level kinda suffers for it.

DQ 7-8 on the 3DS is also improved over it's PS1 and PS2 releases, and the fact you now actually can see the enemies in the game-world works when it's 3D for the best since I thought roaming around in 8 on the PS2 always felt so barren, empty and dull somehow the visible enemies in the 3DS version made it feel more lively and comfy.

A note though, if you are doing a in-universe chronological run then drop everything and start playing DQ11, it's the first game in the "timeline". It's not a big deal, but if that's important to you that's how it is.

Yes, that's the numerical chronology and how most people play them, but some like to have have experienced the world's backdrop to help fill in the story immersion and I kinda get that it would help carry DQ 1&2 with how basic they today and how DQ11 can help zoomers not be bored with the comfy and pretty SNES DQ3 remake due to it being rather straight forward.

It's to late for me anyways lol but I think people asking advice for how to get into the series need to first be asked if they want to just play the highlights, experience the series evolution or do a chronological timeline and feel like epic legends and get that extra connection to the game world.

Looking at some gameplay on yourube. It appears that there is a fan translation available for the PS2 version of the game and it does look better. I might try PS2 emulation even though I've heard it can be spotty at times
