Thoughts on Chrono Cross? I personally prefer it over Trigger, but I'm also generally not into JRPGs so I was really attracted to the ways in which Cross differentiated from its genre. I do know that a lot of people despise it, though.

It's a mixed bag. It has a lot of awesome things in it, but probably too many horribly annoying things to make it a really good game. Examples: the fucking battle music, non-existent character development, awkward battle system, ...

>> No.8556175

Great setting and overall atmosphere. Fantastic soundtrack. Shit battle theme that disrupts it's pacing and immersion. Narrative that has a massive exposition dump in the back-half (which is actually pretty great imo) and then becomes a quest to collect the magical elemental macguffins in the two separate worlds. Lots of character and very charming overall but rather unfocused. A great game overall but not without faults.

i love and prefer chrono cross but i love trigger too.

the only beef with cross is too many characters and there are a few points that are kinda cryptic in knowing what to do next.

i don't knock people preferring trigger. it's a great game too.

The game was always too expensive for me. I wish I had the 500 euros for the kickstarter which just delivered to everyone. Missed out on the joy everyone who loves the game right now and I only have the bootleg plastic toy versions from the pre-pandemic events. Just like the main game, I got a bootleg from Chinatown because it was the only affordable option. Even the stupid Chrono Cross clock the game came with is cheap Chinese plastic unlike the metal clocks of its contemporaries.

I loved everything about it but I only played Trigger when I was 13, and I played Cross about 17 years later so things like the fate of the old characters and how different it was from Trigger just felt really fitting somehow. It feels very bittersweet like life does when you get older and stuff like Serge seeing his own grave and the couple who buried their kid in Termina probably wouldn't affect me as much if I played it when I was 13.I just generally love almost everything about it though. Music, atmosphere, tone and the story.

The story is unnecessarily overcomplicated and schizo.
Too many characters to recruit as a gimmick which makes almost all of them feel generic and severely underdeveloped (and turns the entire game into just a collectathon).
For a sequel, it criminally underused characters from the first game, plus dubious choices with ones that they do bother with (Magus?!)
Even the two world gimmick is underbaked and almost all the locations are very limited and feel like scenery rather than being properly developed and "authentic".

Overall the entire game feels like some gimmicky point-and-click adventure game, rather than a "real" jrpg.
Look at pretty locations, collect all the characters, follow the convoluted story.

When people say this about JRPGs they always mean that the story is pointlessly convoluted, not complicated. All JRPGs have horrible, convoluted stories like soap operas. Doesn't mean they're hard to understand, just that they're written like shit and go all over the place. It's bad writing even if it's for the sake of game design.

I'm not into Toriyama either, but it's weird to call that out so strongly when you're praising Chrono Cross, which has far, FAR worse character art. Toriyama's samefaced people made out of blocks and cylinders are pretty stupid-looking yes, but they are also very cute and charming. That Chrono Cross artist, on the other hand, just sucks.

>> No.8561332

I played it as a kid and while it had charm it ultimately dragged me down because I couldn't care about any of the 50 characters and was bummed it had nothing to do with Trigger.

I replayed it a couple of years ago, trying to be more lenient on it and my thoughts were (a) it is a HUGE drag because of the unbearable snails pace of the combat engine EVEN using emulated speeding up of the loading (b) it does suffer from being unable to focus on many characters because of the excessive character pool, (c) it actually DOES have a fair amount to do with Trigger but they're all buried in the lategame which is a weird choice (I think I quit right when I reached the frozen sea on my childhood playthrough), d) the final boss is bullshit and the true ending is even more bullshit.

Anyway, taken on its own it's an interesting game with a quirky style, though I think the huge playable character count was a mistake that adds nothing and the speed of random encounters is unbearable. But it has one of the best OSTs in all of video games.

That's what I get for being so tired from work, my thoughts and all the backspacing created an unclear message. I meant to say that Square has shifted its target audience, especially for Chrono Cross, away from me towards high-income earners with their products and events. The Chrono Cross kickstarter from a couple years ago just delivered at the start of this year, but I was unable to participate because 500+euros is not something anyone could just spend on a whim, and it was to kickstart it to be affordable. The expensive Chrono Cross symphonies Square held just before the pandemic was where I was able to get the toy which plays Star Stealing Girl instead of Radical Dreamers from the gift shop. While it is encouraging they are doing so much more with Chrono Cross, their focus is on appealing to the wealthy younger crowd: https://youtu.be/qqYEivU9_Bg

There are lots of accents in English Cross.
Cockney? Australian? - Kidd
French - Harle & Pierre
German? - Irenes
Middle English - Turnip
??? - Poshul
??? - Korcha and his family
Add others if you notice more.

The accents weren't actually written in. Its an algorithm that auto applies the accent depending on who's speaking. The text in the game is stored as normal English but "your" gets automatically changed to "yer" if Kid is talking.

Kid: Spawn of Schala/Lavos the space invader, associated with Sun/Fire, with Serge a lot and marries Serge
Harle: Came from the Dragons of the Earth plus Schala if you believe the theory, associated with the moon, and Lynx's right hand woman and loves Serge too. I think they're the same height?
