It's simple, but it Just Werks, like some older arcade classics. Doom has more depth, and is better, but Wolfenstein 3D has that cartoony aesthetic and the treasure hunting, with a score counter, and it just sets it all apart.

I won't turn down a burger just because steak is better.

look i am very late to the party of Wolfenstein 3D but to say the game is outdated is not true, simple doesn't equal outdated, i played the whole Wolfenstein series a while ago for the first time, Wolf 3D is the best in the series with RTCW begin the second best one, i mean ffs i finished the game about 4 times already which is more than any other shooter besides doom, i remember people saying Wolfenstein 3D was obsolete because of Doom and i listened to them but i wish i didn't.

Wolfenstein 3D is a steaming pile of garbage of a sequel that destroyed the greatness of the original stealth games. It's much dumber, much more repetitive, and much less suspenseful. Fuck john carmHACK and fuck romero.

Interesting opinion. Not one I agree with, but I respect it. What lead you to that opinion?

>i remember people saying Wolfenstein 3D was obsolete because of Doom
It's easy to say that because Doom has so much more depth and so much more content, but again, I'm not gonna turn down a nice hamburger just because steak exists. It's still a fun enough game, and it has its own style that makes it feel very different.
>inb4 >food analogies

>and i listened to them but i wish i didn't
Well, now you know. I personally did not care for the Return To Danger expansions at all, but you shouldn't listen to me, give them a try themselves.

Returning to a previous point about fan content, though the scene isn't quite as big as Doom's, Wolfenstein 3D's mod scene is still very much there, and is still ticking away, making neat things coming up on THIRTY years in less than four months time. Games which are plain bad and boring don't enjoy that kind of sustained attention.

One of my favorite mods is Totenkopf SDL Edition, lots of attention to detail, nice enemy and weapon design too, and really remarkably atmospheric for a game which restrict itself to 90 degree increment block corridors and rooms for its level design.
You may also enjoy Rise Of The Triad, which started development as Wolfenstein 3D's sequel, but changed due to iD changing their minds, but letting Apogee retool it to something else. Got quite overshadowed by Doom at the time, but it's fun in its own weird way, and about 10 times as arcade-like as Wolfenstein 3D.

I cant wait for ROTT Remastered to release soon, I hate the DOS controls. Im not used to it at all and Im too busy to really put the time in to get used to them. Not saying the controls are bad, Im just a zoomer who is used to WASD controls. Dont understand why they the winrott devs dont bother fixing their source port.

No, he's talking about a modern port of the original game, not the remake. I'm also looking forward to it as well, because I would like some more control options and graphics options, and the current sourceports around, such as WinRottGL, is a turboturd.
The game deserves better.

Agreed, you can clear out a whole section of the level, but there will still be one or two enemies walking around somewhere, and you'll hear the doors trundling open around you, but never 100% sure where from. Enemy AI, while extremely basic, has infinite pathfinding. You can alert enemies at the other end of a level, and they'll never stop chasing after you. It's quite scary to hear doors opening all around you as enemies close in on you, knowing that all it takes is a couple shots to put you down. You have to keep your head on a swivel because you can be flanked by all directions. All enemies are different flavors of hitscan that can put you down in 2-3 shots, but you can still stunlock them by shooting them, and even dodge some of the damage by strafing quickly.

>Interesting opinion. Not one I agree with, but I respect it. What lead you to that opinion?
i can't put it in words but it's definitely the most enjoyable one in the series, RTCW was good and i appreciate that it continued with the old school design but i only finished it once so far, the new Wolfenstein games are one and done trash, couldn't stomach them for more than one playthrough, while with Wolfenstein 3d i find myself playing them every other month to completion, the game got a lot of soul that not even doom could replicate, it's an FPS in it's purest form, the bosses, enemies and their designs and quotes get stuck with you, the levels aren't as bad as people say they are, keep in mind i have zero nostalgia about it, i am about 30 years late to the game.
>I personally did not care for the Return To Danger expansions at all
i would recommend only playing spear of destiny if that's the case, return to danger and the ultimate challenge go a little heavy with secrets to progress through the levels.

Metal Gear is more primitive and could be beaten by memorising the levels and repeating the same patterns all over again. Castle Wolfenstein and its sequel are more realistic than Metal Gear games, and while they're primitive compared to the likes of Thief, Hitman, Splinter Cell, and other modern stealth games, they were pretty more advanced than everything made before those 3. I bet you think it's primitive because "gwafix bad".

Wolfenstein 3D is more boring desu. It's like a dungeon crawler, but dumbed down in every possible way. The gameplay gets stale in 15 minutes. Why play it when you could play gauntletlikes and diablolikes or literally any other FPS game? Into the Eagles Nest deserved a better spiritual sequel.

>>8565365
>do they work on modern pcs?
No, use an Apple II emulator, Vice 64, or DosBox. Apple II is the recommended version because that's the platform the game was developed for.
>how many games are they?
2. The sequel is an improvement from the first, it added a bunch of new mechanics, but both are different games with different objectives and you have to decide for yourself which one you like more.

Not them, but the DOS version looks slightly less ugly; and I like the sound of "does not flash the screen or squeal at you when you bump into walls".

Still hard to believe that someone's genuinely still mad at a 29-year-old game. Will have to add Into the Eagles Nest to my list, though.
