Comix Zone kicks ass! Considering Sega never made a sequel, what's the closest equivalent/clone?

Honestly, there's not much out there like Comix Zone. It's one-of-a-kind. The absolute closest thing would be pic related—some crummy old Batman game for the Amiga, C64, etc. called The Caped Crusader. Besides that, I'm having trouble thinking of anything else.

In terms of aesthetic Madworld comes close
Just replace the comic book stuff with black and white Manga

>> No.8547170

Considering the format gimmick of a guy knowing he's sucked into a piece of fiction by a villain, and it being a challenging beat em up, Viewtiful Joe is the only one that really comes to mind.

I remember reading about some kind of spiritual sequel for PSP in a magazine back in the day. Or maybe that game was simply inspired by Comix Zone but didn't use the exact comic book motif. I'm not sure if itwas ever released and I can't remember the name. It was also a beat-em-up.

>> No.8547486

Definitely Viewtiful Joe.

There isn't one because Sega owns a patent on games where you play through a comic book.

>> No.8547567

They wanted a Saturn sequel, but it got shot down immediately when it was brought up. All that exists is a single mockup by the artist.

That was Viewtful Joe iirc.

The reason for that is Sega literally patented the gameplay style of Comix zone, and never used it again. No sequel, no remake. Not even some Japanese Sega dev group making their own mangazone using this patent and has nothing to do with comix zone. Just patent it, make one game.

Like Sega of japan could use that pattent to make something Sakura Wars manga related? IDK. Give it out to the team that made SOR4 and tell them to make a new Comix Zone? Weird that Sega sits on patents like this.

Fucking imagine Comix Zone 2 by the guys who made Streets of Rage 4.

There is nothing really like it, only thing I've played that kinda has the same vibe at times is the faux-retro Scott Pilgrim beat 'em up, that obviously is more River City Ransom than anything else but it still also has a very alt comic-book universe it all takes place in and an awesome soundtrack just like Comix Zone.

Viewtiful Joe is like a straight clone almost, but Comix Zone is way more AMERICAN. for example you have the FREEDOM to choose alternate paths through levels.
