I like shmups. Got a hard touhou 7 1cc today, apparently that game's retro now. I've also been grinding away at dodonpachi daioujou for a 1-all. I'd love to make a wad out of that someday, because there's a need for more good shmup mods.
Outside of that, not really. There's some really distinct mods that make the game as fresh as it was when I first played it so it's hard for me to get bored for too long.

What are some of the best wads?

I'm relatively new to the community but am very familiar with the game as I played them as a kid, but a year or two ago I got back into classic doom.

Some I've already played:
Btsx 1&2
Plutonium 2
Going down
Revilution
Eviternity
Hell revealed 2

I just downloaded sunlust and I'm not sure I'm going to be able to handle it kek. But we'll see.

Turok+ is a great way to replay the original game. You can use Turok 2 weapons in it. And mix and match your arsenal.

I decided to try out that Babel mod that was posted around here. I played through most of Doom 1.

If anything, this mod feels like what Doom should have always been. The pistol weapon isn't useless anymore, all the weapons have had a damage buff, and the enemies are more engaging to fight. The weapon swapping is absolutely perfect and makes the combat feel smooth and slick. I like the improved animations too.
I was really impressed with the title screen too. I didn't even know stuff like that was possible.
The recoil effect on the screen is annoying and I couldn't find a way to turn it off, but it helped to make the weapons feel more powerful so goal accomplished I guess.

Overall an 8/10 and and I will absolutely use this mod on a regular basis.

There isn't right now, but thanks for reminding me. I can probably go through and painstakingly add in the ability to disable it or at least disable *most* of it since some of it affects gameplay.

Alright, well that was less of a pain in the ass than I thought it would be.
Next version of Babel will have the ability to disable screen zoom and angle/pitch change effects. For all weapons except the SMG (and chaingun but that was a bug), these effects were purely cosmetic anyway. For the SMG some extra code has been added so that the spread pattern still shifts up slightly to simulate the ~0.4 degrees of pitch change if pitching is disabled, so the weapon handles identically.
Weapon pushback (A_Recoil) isn't configurable because it's actually gameplay affecting, but if such screen effects bothered you you'll notice a big difference without them. Personally I think it makes the weapons feel less powerful but hey, it's not hurting anything.
One more webm to follow showing just how big of a difference this can make with the chaingun in particular.

I have, and mine are what I'm looking for. I know what he did and I've done tracers like that before for other minimods, but visually I designed the sprite tracers in Babel to look a certain way which is how I prefer them. Also, since Babel is a singleplayer mod there is no reason for me to use ACS for netcode compatibility like he did. Other tracer types such as model and classic (in the new version) were included as alternatives, but sprite tracers are the generally intended form to be used.
In fact, my personal preference for tracer use is that, for player weapons, they should only be used with autoaim off. With it on most mods including my own tend to look a bit janky.

with all the """controversial"" things doom mapping has achieved, i'm just honestly surprised it hasn't happened yet
hell levels could be based on his paintings with oddly colored skies and perspective skewed architecture
pain elementals could be matso balls
hell knights could be golems
barons could be made of gold
the chaingunner could be full orthodox with his ammo belt being a torah scroll
it'd be wonderful, but i'm not sure a full 6 million could fit in only 32 maps while still being playable

Side by side guns have remained more visible in media and fiction, partially because they just remained common IRL around the world for so long, and remains a mainstay of old period pieces like westerns,
it's also more visually striking from a centered first person perspective, where you get a good look at both barrels, and then both muzzle flashes as it touches off.

An over under would probably still have had aesthetic good effect, you could still show both the empty chambers when the gun is at the side and reloading, but it's not AS good as two blasting barrels side by side.

Every seventh map of a megawad is usually a Dead Simple clone, due to it being hardcoded or some shit in the original map where once all the mancubi are killed, some wall has to lower, and once all the arachnotrons are dead, another wall has to lower. Eviternity doesn't do this because it's "not like the other megawads" and Skulltiverse does the same thing Valiant does, except now you have to protect the mancubus until the very end.

I feel like Doom is one of the few retro FPS to actually get rocket launchers right. You hit a tight group with a rocket and theyre all going to explode into gibs. In other games the range and damage are too low so it barely works on groups.

Quake, Blood, these also had great rocket launchers, hell, Duke had a micro rocket volley gun which hurriedly obliterated anything and everything with even small salvos, short of bosses (and even they were at its mercy if you had a full load).
Shadow Warrior also let you have heat seeking rockets, on top of a small ballistic nuclear warhead, which honestly Duke should have had.

Half-Life's was a bit limited because you could only carry six rockets, but instead you could laser guide them with great precision, which was particularly nice for downing choppers, but also you could use your laser to divert incoming enemy rockets.
Goldeneye had a decent one too, could only carry a few, and it was rare, but it let you project one of Goldeneye's deadly explosions at long range, and the high pitched screaming of the warhead both gives you a split second warning that you're about to get fucked, and sounds plain cool.

Then you have Rise Of The Triad, which is like 70% rocket launchers, with satisfying gib effects and splash damage, variety in roles and function, and being generous with how irresponsible you can be with said splash damage.

The 90s was a good time for bazookas and RPGs.

Always thought Doom had one of the worst retro rocket launchers, due to the way autoaim works and its small splash. As a Marathonchad used to blowing enemies away in all three dimensions, playing Doom for the first time and trying the rocket launcher felt extremely unsatisfying, and if ammo isn't a problem I'll nearly always take either shotty, the chaingun, or the energy gun over it.

That's the rub. Autoaim is what makes or breaks the RL. Even though it's a good weapon by itself, without autoaim you can aim in between enemies and from far away while hitting sweet spots to avoid the splash damage as opposed to having to pray you manage to hit what you want and not eat rockets in the process.

Youre right that Blood's is excellent.

I might actually abandon it just because bouncing fucks up the decals (aka it makes none). I was trying to make gibbing a bit more satisfying but I don't want to compromise something that already works for a semi-silly new feature. How is Quake's rockets not great? Satisfying thump that sends them off, with a good explosion on impact, also blowing out particles in every direction to convey the speed and intensity of the explosions.

You're given a pretty comfortable supply of ammo, and it's just amazing for blowing up zombies, vores, wizards, pit fiends (if you get the drop on them), and honestly just about anything else in your way if necessary.
Though it was pioneered in ROTT and Marathon, and even kind of in Doom, rocketjumping really took off with Quake.

That said, I play variety of all sorts of great games I like so Doom isn't the only thing. But the fact I can go back to it after awhile and enjoy it more than just about all other games I ever played really speaks to how great the games are. Enemy ideas:

Enemy that targets other monsters with a projectile that makes them partially invisible. Also makes you partially invisible if it happens to hit you.

Enemy that can't move or attack when you're looking at it, but when you're not it moves very fast and has a fast, high-damage melee attack that knocks you back. Have to make sure to keep it in your line-of-sight during a fight. Never turn your back on a doorway if there's one in the other room.

Enemy which randomly switches targets and will target anything/everything - the player, monsters, arch-viles, other members of the same species, barrels. Very deadly if you try to fight it one-on-one but can be used as a weapon (kinda like a cybie except you don't have to convince it to in-fight).

Enemy that eats monster corpses to spawn more of itself. Starts off in passive mode where it avoids the player and looks for corpses, but if enough of them have line-of-sight with each other they enter attack mode and become very dangerous. Can be ignored during a fight (and they'll help you clean up corpses that arch-viles might otherwise ressurect) except that you have to make sure to keep their numbers in check.

Imp-like enemy that can resurrect members of the same species (Golden Souls 2 has this monster but I wish it used it more and it was used in other wads)

Flying enemy that can clip through walls

Enemy that shoots projectiles at where you're going to be, rather than where you are, based on your position, velocity and the arc you're travelling along. Makes circle-strafing difficult.

Pair of enemies, one avoids the player and spawns a tough companion monster. If you kill the companion monster it will spawn another one. It takes several seconds to spawn it's companion giving you time to kill it during the process.

Enemy that gets faster and more aggressive the lower its health is. If you start damaging it, make sure to finish it off.

Ok, so I want to hear people's input on some aesthetic or stylistic additions to potentially do for 94 Protons Of /vr/

>cosmetic weapons
They behave the same, but have new looks and sound. Unlike the more smooth animations I usually do for stuff like this, I was pondering making them slightly slower and have less amounts of frames to make them look a bit more like they fit with the vanilla monsters.

>complete monster sounds
Some of Doom's monsters have no unique hurt or idle sounds, using the ones which go on the zombies or pinkie instead. Would you guys be interested in adding new ones to make them more distinct?
Or do you feel that would affect the gameplay too much, giving the player slightly more of a clue about nearby monsters?

>a couple of extra props
Mainly I'm thinking since Plutonia ostensibly takes place in the middle of Africa (Map 01 is named Congo), that possibly some jungle trees and bushes could be added for people who want to use those for their map, if I can conjure up some suitable sprites for that.
Don't really have much else in mind, beyond MAYBE fires, but we have animated wall textures for that.
Do any of you guys want explosive barrel variants for different styles of levels, like wooden barrels for hell castles, and explosive flesh blobs for flesh hell levels?

>plasma marine
An anon suggested a zombie with a plasma rifle as an additional monster. The way I'd envision that is basically like a zombieman with a helmet who fires bursts of 10 plasma shots at the player's own rate of fire, high damage, but is as fragile as the shotgun baldy or chaingunner, or inbetween. May or may not drop a plasma rifle, and they would NOT be the fast bastards like in Scythe 2.
I'm not huge on that idea, but what do you guys think about it?

Do shoot me down on stuff like this if you think it's way too much.

>> No.8552323

>>8552301
>>complete monster sounds
This is completely unnecessary for what's primarily meant to be a map set. If I cared so much about monsters having distinct sounds, I would load a gameplay mod for it.

Hmm, new weapons can't hurt as long as they're just sprite/sound replacements, but changing stats is going to be contentious, especially if you finish the guns when the set is nearing completion in the mapping department and the mappers balanced their maps around the vanilla guns.

It's pretty much a gamble when it comes to old source codes. While this Blood discovering is a good sign, there's still a chance that Shogo's files are lost to time. Stuff like this is always sad regardless of the game's quality, but that's just how it is.

I'm not opposed to it. I don't understand where the inspiration comes from and as such it seems random to me so I'd envision it just being a tiny part of the wad, occasionally here and there. He'd drop small cell charge, not a plasma rifle. I can't remember if this is doable through extended dehacked or if it requires MBF21.
>Unlike the more smooth animations I usually do for stuff like this, I was pondering making them slightly slower and have less amounts of frames to make them look a bit more like they fit with the vanilla monsters.
So in other words, use the original Doom number of frames and just replace the sprites? Not complaining, just seemed like a weird way of wording that.

I appreciate the work you do but I think you're going to overload yourself and push back the release indefinitely if you start working on cosmetic stuff. >> No.8552427

>>8552339
>Hmm, new weapons can't hurt as long as they're just sprite/sound replacements
That's all they'd be, nobody was interested in weapon tweaks, and it's easier for everyone to balance around the gameplay they know already.

>If you can do it without sacrificing the SS Nazis for lunchlunch then that would be good.
I think that if we use DehExtra instead of DsDeHacked, we could still add our own frames and monsters without having to cut up existing ones, and DehExtra is supported by more ports (including popular ones like GzDoom, as well as Woof, From Doom With Love, and the new PrBoom+), as opposed to DsDeHacked which only works in DSDA, currently.
Besides, I don't think we need any of the added functions from DsDeHacked.

>>8552356
Might be more suitable and easier to balance around.
And yeah, they should walk slow and be bowled over by an SSG blast.

>>8552357
>I don't understand where the inspiration comes from
Some anon suggested it in the last round of questions. Wasn't that hot on it, but as I autismally drafted up a backstory for 94 Protons, I realized they could kinda fit.

>and as such it seems random to me so I'd envision it just being a tiny part of the wad
Depends on how much people want to use them. They can fit through a 64 wide door, unlike Arachnotron, so that's useful, but they also don't sustain a constant slow salvo, instead hitting you for a burst of pain (I think he would be too deadly if he sustained fire).

>>8552415
>I think you're going to overload yourself and push back the release indefinitely if you start working on cosmetic stuff.
Well, it would be minor things, I figure I can reuse stuff which exists.

>You can get obsessed, like you wanted to change the TT diabolist sprites to a slightly different shade of red and spent like two months doing it lol
That's true, but the Diabolist is a reskinned Arch-Vile, which means there's shitloads of detailed frames, so there's that. I think I also have a better work flo

I like this, and it's a bit like a related idea I've had. There's a lich that spawns as a powerful projectile-casting enemy, but if you kill it, it just comes back some time later. However, if you find its phylactery (which can be embedded in another enemy or hidden somewhere else in the level), you can destroy it and kill the lich for good.
>Enemy that gets faster and more aggressive the lower its health is. If you start damaging it, make sure to finish it off.
Probably the best/most vivid 2.5D shooter dream I've ever had one of these. It was a sort of atmospheric thermal plant level with a few weak enemies and a lot of lava pits everywhere; the goal was to sabotage the plant, which would cause a timed explosion and open up a new part of a larger hub area. However, when I began the timer, I remembered that in addition to the main escape bulkhead (which had only just opened), there was a similar bulkhead earlier in the level, which I backtracked to.

It revealed a secret new floor safe from lava, and had a mummy-cocoon type enemy, totally wrapped up and sort wiggling towards me, legs bound as well. It would slowly unravel its wrappings and be able to move its legs a bit faster, and as I shot it bits of wrapping would fly off and pieces of flesh would be exposed, making it even faster. At some point all the wrappings just disintegrated revealing this horrifying fleshy humanoid with gems embedded in it, which began shrieking and running directly at me. I killed it barely in time before it reached me, and picked up some kind of special escape key, and woke up. If I ever have the time to make my own standalone FPS, it's going to have that exact encounter.

While being unable to see clearly further less than one foot from my face, at that.
Weapons are much less work than monsters though, much less frames, no rotations aside from maybe projectiles. I only have one monster in the pipeline currently though, the final boss, and then potentially one added enemy.

Textures are close to done, and I also have a whole stack of useful .midis in case people don't have any good choices of their own.

Although to some degree that sounds pretty far-fetched, that got me wondering if someone actually done that? Like, the idea of itself of someone giving money to increase popularity of your mod or map sounds just silly. Am I dumb? It's basically meme at this point. Yes, Plutonia does use revenants, chaingunners and all of the beastiary. It's very first wad to bother with the enemy placement. It influenced the combat of basically all modern wads. It's not considered hard wad today, just average challenge. Maps are also quite short, so it's not bad for blind playthroughs either. I find it kind of oxymoronic to complain about Plutonia's difficulty. These people want to be hardcore and play without saves on uv, and yet they can't complete a medium difficulty wad. Don't listen to them anon. Just try it. If it feels too hard, lower difficulty or save on some checkpoints. You have to practice to become good player and not blame wad, if you can't beat it blind on uv while still lacking the skill to do that.

You're missing out.

TNT is somewhat lengthy at times, and since it was originally a community project, it kinda shows at time with uneven map quality, but there's a lot of good stuff in there too. Gets pretty experimental at times, in good ways, and sometimes in maybe not so good ways.
Plutonia is much more brief, most of the levels aren't very big at all, and as opposed to TNT which can be described as being more 'adventure' focused, with the occasional long trek and lots of discovery, Plutonia is a lot more combat focused, setting you up against tough (but mostly fair) 'puzzles' of fighting based on clever usage of monsters.

Doom 64 is a bit different, but at the core basically remains the classic Doom experience, only there's all new levels with some nifty tricks and setups thanks to an upgraded engine, and its all clad in a dark and gritty aesthetic with gloomy ambient noise instead of music. It's quite well put together, and tries to do the most that it can in spite of the limitations of its target hardware.
Very much worth playing if you like the original games, particularly given that it's more accessible than ever in 2022.

>>8555058
I think that the new official ports actually have support for gyro controls. It's vanilla Doom though, so no looking up or down, but I figure if you're into the smoothness of gyro controls, then really smooth turning (together with a smooth analog stick for movement) may be more than enough for at least a proof of concept.

Dunno if that link will work. Anyway, it's just a small dehacked alternative to voodoo dummies. It charges, and shoots and you can time it out with teleporters or tall doors. It can trigger like 5 things. Door open stays, door open wait close (once and repeating), lift lower wait raise.

It had to be tagged as counting toward kill % for it to work in GZDoom so you'll have to kill it with a crusher when you're done using it to run scripts.

The ep3 ending splash screen was a pan from an idyllic meadow with some rabbits on it, and onto the burning city with the impaled head. It was obviously implied that the rabbit head was just from one of the wild rabbits seen on that meadow. Literally just a juxtaposition of an idyllic scene with extreme violence for cheap shock value.
Daisy was retconned into existence in ep4 for no reason. If you're looking for the source of the extreme pareidolia in conjuring up Doom lore from an off-hand line or image, it's not even nuDoom that started it, this shit started with episode 4 of the original game.

On this note, I found it odd how much that episode loved the lava floor. Besides Mt Erebus, I really had to dig for its use in the originals with how much episode 2 and 3 love their bloodpools.
I also seem to have a weird idea about where this episode takes place. I thought it was on Earth, which is where I would not expect it to have all these green marble demon keeps in lava lakes.

It works great in Doom 64, where the Meatball spits two Souls at a time and four on death, and the Souls (now much more aggressive) actually explode on their death so you can't do the old Wirehanger maneuver on them without eating shit, making them actually really dangerous.

Midway did that because they couldn't have Archies, and they needed an elite monster to make the player go "Oh fuck!"
We have Archies though, so I feel it's less necessary, and so we can have normal Meatballs and use those accordingly. I know of some sadistic ways to use the vanilla ones as is anyway.

Too many frames, too little cartridge space (bigger cartridges would make the game more expensive to buy), also there may be some limitations in terms of what the engine could handle.

IIRC the Jaguar version, and the ports based on that, which is a lot of the old ports, couldn't cope with resurrecting monsters on the go, hence why Nightmare! is stripped out of all ports from back then (UV was sometimes labeled NM, however). I think D64 is actually pretty different, but there could still be memory constraints.
They did a lot of shit like making a lot of textures monochrome, then color tinting them, getting more visual variety, because cartridge real estate and RAM space was quite limited.

They really do the most they can, and it's actually pretty admirable that it still comes out good.

What the other guy said, really depends on what you're doing, and your technique. Doom's tradition of centered weapons I find makes things a lot easier, because the perspective is generally very consistent and straightforward.

I largely frankensprite, but I end up drawing in details as well. Sometimes I'll take a shape from something I like, blank it out (maybe even deform it), and then paint in the detail.
A few helpful things to keep in mind, regardless of approach:
>1: Doom stretches pixels vertically by 20%, for some things you can actually ignore paying attention to this, but for things which are supposed to be round, it can be good to keep it in mind.
>2: In art, without a readily apparent light source present, light will shine onto objects from the upper left.
>3: Don't get too carried away with the 'length' of a weapon, it has to fit on screen and also line up reasonably with the shooting.
>4: To give surfaces texture, there's a lot you can do by duplicating the area (entire sprite even), throwing a filter onto that, then making that new filtered layer translucent, then you can also erase away parts on that top layer, either partially to create some kind of smooth visual, or in full because whatever got filtered didn't look good.
>5: You can also do things like draw in stuff like wood grain or scratches on metal (and wood, and plastic)) by using thin and faint single strokes of black or white.
>6: Something you can do for a surface which is supposed to have a non-gray color is to make it gray anyway while working on it, then working out the detail, then coloring it afterwards, you can also use multiple copied layers of the surface in different colors, say a more reddish hue or a more yellowish hue for a brown wood, then erase splotches from one laid above the other to have a more nuanced look.
>7: You can also do shine for muzzle flashes this way.
>8: If working within palette limitations, dithering can help a lot in some cases.
