itt: Eye-catching game covers that have been burned into your memory from seeing them all the time at Blockbuster or Family Video, despite the fact that you've still never even played them

/notretro/ but I remember seeing this in the used game bin years ago. Just the case, no label, nothing on the spine. Just this and the 18 plus age rating. I quickly forgot about it, but It stuck with me for years. I desperately searched for it online, having to scower listings of every steelbook for the PS3 available. I thought it was some weird gory medical puzzle game given the cover and I thought it was like Trauma centre but on super steroids. Years later I played Dead Rising 2 and it hit me like a ton of bricks that this was the game. The cover said Zombrex the entire time. Funny stuff. As for retro, I remember seeing a copy of Nightmare Creatures, gathering dust amidst a pile of old unwanted games at a game store once, thought the cover looked cool and always wondered what it was like. Played it recently for the first time, it’s not bad

i bought bloodrayne 1 and 2 at a pawn shop recently since they were cheap and looked like they could be fun,i played the first one for about 45 minutes and it seems okay, nothing impressive tho,2 definitely looks better.

2nd bloodrayne is soo damn fun, shame we never got a follow up, though I wish they'd move away from the apocalyptic stuff half way through the game and focus more on stuff like nightclubs and city streets at night, always felt like it could live in the same hitman contracts universe and VTMB for the majority of the game.
1 lacks variety, but at least it has a cool first level. also Rayne's in game model in 1 is more cute than sexy. The janky head movements in cutscenes adds to the cuteness.

Saw this game cover for years on the shelves, it looked like the most generic shit ever, never bother to look at the back of it. It just reminded me of Headhunter's generic cover.
"DOA2 HARDCORE? wtf does that even mean!?"
Some time later I was watching a g4 show talking about the history of the game dead or alive fighting game, they talked about porting dead or alive 2 on the ps2 and being subtitled "Hardcore" and then they showed the abbreviated title of it, and that's when I remembered that generic as cover, this awesome game was sitting there the whole time and I never bothered to look at the back of the cd case. I finally tried it and became a doa fan instantly, got an xbox afterwards along with doa 3, doax, ninja gaiden and doa ultimate, god damn doa ultimate was so fucking good.
I remember being disappointed with doa4 when I made the jump to 360

>6-7/10 reviews, not great but not total garbage

>90% either never got a sequel or were part of a series with lots of other 6-7/10s churned out in a short span of time (Army Men, Worms, Might & Magic, Gauntlet, Hunter the Reckoning, etc.)

You missed out on Dark Cloud. It was an awesome game until you got to the 100 level slog of a dungeon at the end

All 3 of those series were good. Which one you like most is up to taste in a particular aesthetic.
Also lmao I just realized none of those games were on Gamecube. Nintendo had 0 choice

the entire genre was missing from gamecube and even wii. I guess that's what made bayonetta 2 being on wii u pretty weird too, a decade had gone by and the first game dedicated nintendo fans were going to be playing in the genre was a sequel to a multiplatform take on 3d action after it had been established for 8 years

Bloodrayne, God of War, and Dead to Rights ended up working on me because they got rented. Bought Dark Cloud but I can't remember why. Still really like that series to this day..
I totally agree on Blinx. I bought it just a few years ago after finally getting an Xbox and it is not at all the game I thought it was.

Fur Fighters and Darkwatch ended up getting bought. I remember getting Fur Fighters from KB Toys, but didn't keep it long. I don't know what I expected. I just bought Darkwatch a couple of months ago. I remember reading the Game Informer story a lot.

Bought Gun, Black, Dr. Muto, XIII, and Medievil was in heavy rotation as a kid. Gun feels like a false memory because it's so unfinished I only feel like I played half the game. Dr. Muto is really cool. Medievil is one of my favorite games but I would never recommend someone play it without specifically calling it, "greater than the sum of its parts."
Totally agree on Advent Rising, I-Ninja, Army of Two, and Psi-Ops, specifically.

this and its sequel are the best kind of rental games. Short enough so you can blast your way through it on a weekend and feel like you accomplished beating it without any need to buy. Its still a unique experience everyone should try out at least once.

I bought this game at the mall just because money was burning a hole in my pocket I guess. I went to the arcade and played House of the Dead with both guns and these two little black kids were watching me. When I was done shooting zombies my GameStop bag was missing so I never got to play this mediocre looking game

Mattel initially distributed the NES across various European countries, Australia and NZ, so these consoles had "Mattel Version" on them. When Nintendo themselves took over distribution (c. 1990), they styled their consoles with "NES Version" on them to distinguish them. In European countries where Mattel did not distribute the NES, the consoles had "European Version' on them.

I love that game, it has the feel of one of those shovelware games that was accidentally good. the huge battles are really fun to stomp through and the bosses and special enemies are a lot of fun to fight. The characters and dialogue are pretty corny too which is fun. It really walks the line between challenging and bullshit at parts though, especially later in the game. I would not play it on hard after beating it.

>I get the impression that yanks never cared much for Konami's STG
We really liked those games but, for some stupid reason, the ports to the US were few and far between. Then half the time when games were ported there would be unnecessary gameplay changes. By the time we had easier access to them we didn't care because we were used to not having them, tech was improving in other genres, AND the whole genre had evolved into no-fun bullet hell.
