Japan target audience: Kids with game consoles (and kids at arcades)
Europe target audience: Kids whose dads bought them microcomputers
US target audience: Dads who brought their work PC's home

Surely Sierra and LucasArts games would qualify? But it's unfair to single out Microprose since they were bankrolled by the Defense Department to produce Cold War advertisements for the US military much like COD was similar propaganda in a later time (that was why Microprose were based in Maryland near DC instead of California like the vast majority of the video game industry).

>American war-related game
>Is literally just propaganda with generic american hero protag
Every time.

>> No.8544639

but even putting war/flight sims aside Americans always had a fetish for dry D&D shit like Might & Magic and Wizardry

>> No.8544651

OP's being unfair anyway, Microprose were by and far the biggest American supporters of the Amiga and they released stuff for it pretty much from start to finish.

Do you have a source for this?

The video game crash had a detrimental effect in that sense, Americans didn't figure out side scrollers until more than halfway through the 4th gen.

Even the most notable American platformer of the 80s had a semi-realistic art style. Americans like to think of themselves as always doing things very seriously, including when it’s time to relax by watching sports very seriously.

And don't forget the adventure games. Do you have fond memories of Lane Mastadon (cover story of computer gaming world in 1988)?

People have fond memories of playing Rastan and Castlevania that year, but few people alive today go on about their fond memories of Lane Mastadon silly adventures.

Rastan is talked about in most /vr/ music threads. And to be fair it. Did have a PC port but it was awful and missing the legendary music.

Volgarr the Viking was pretty much an indie game version of Rastan. I always wondered if the title would've been better remember if it had been ported to the NES. It always felt weird Taito only did a Master System version.

I know Quicksilver Software (known for shitty computer ports of Data East and SNK games) were affiliated with the US military; they're still around and produce simulation software for military training.

Because the average European lives a very dry and boring life, thus they seek wackiness as a form of escapism. The average American on the other hand lives a very wacky and clown like existence, thus they seek boringness as a form of escapism.
