For me, the advantage sm64 has over banjo is the aesthetics. Grunty's lair and levels are covered in that disgusting poopy texture that plagued n64 games meanwhile sm64 mostly accepts that it can't look organic and instead they just go for blatant polygon abstraction environments that might not look realistic but at least they don't look like shit. Banjo does have some gameplay improvements over sm64 but the aesthetics are just so shitty.

The levels themselves are linear though, there is an order to get the stars in via the mission select screen. There is no order in Banjo Kazooie.

SM64: Nonlinear hub world, linear levels

I'll say what I said then, you can still get them out of order if you want or you know how to, but a first play through will probably be in the direction of the mission objective screen at the beginning. The game has a vision of the order you will follow, whether or not you actually follow it.
