It's poorly designed. You can feel it throughout the entire game from start to finish. I have no idea why anyone would prefer this to Circle of the Moon. That's all before the retarded double castle bullshit.

Yeah it’s pretty tedious. COTM has been its fair share of bullshit but it didn’t actively put me to sleep like HOD and it’s hideous neon sprites did. Aria all the way

I must be the only person on the board that loves all three games. They're great pocket metroidvanias. I haven't played through the DS games so I can't talk there. The Bloodstained games are also great. I know CotM isn't dev'd by the usual, but it's still good stuff.

What kinda snobby picky asshole actually hates these games?
>they're not classicvanias!
Okay. Go play one of those again. Try loop 2 on them. You think you're hot shit. Try loop 3 and 4. Better yet BEAT Dracula X. Good luck.

I ended up hating them because I kept buying them hoping for another SotN, but they were all cut-down portable games, and they all felt too similar. Even Bloodstained tries, but is not up to that level.

Symphony of the Night is lightning in a bottle though. You can tell when you play it.
Certain game reach peaks that cannot be assailed. Consider: Konami's CV team put their all into making that game as good as they could BECAUSE it was JUST another 2D game. They knew that lots of retards would hate it because it didn't have a 3D world, so they bled into the best 2D experience they could.

Harmony was my first actual CV game. Still love it, as well as the bookends around it. When I played SotN for the first time in 2018, my jaw hit the floor. HOLY SHIT THIS IS GOOD.
But, I recently played through HoD and AoS on the Advance Collection and still enjoyed them.

And yes, I love the Classicvanias too. The series has a shocking % of great titles.

Many of the souls in AoS have drop rates in the 1%-2% range.
Some of them even have drop rates of 0.5%
Nothing in COTM even comes close to that bullshit. Collecting souls if fucking stupid anyways since most of them are just variations on each other (you can throw a bone instead of a spear. you shoot an arrow instead of a fireball)
I think the real reason people don't like COTM is because you can't just out-DPS the bosses and they suck at the game.

>> No.8545071

>>8544943
It's completionists, they need to get every thing there is to feel like they've beaten a game. And it's clear CotM isn't a game your supposed to 100%, with the cards being more of a bonus to add run variation than something to seek out, and that's fine because wizard mode just you all the cards at the start of the game. In contrast, AoS is very much a game designed around 100% it , and the game helps you at it. It has items and souls that increase your luck for a better droprate and a large portion of the map is dedicated to helping you grind, with rooms that have nothing but a single monster type in it.

>> No.8545083

I wouldn't be surprised if the devs decided the game was too easy and "fixed" it by quadrupling boss hp five minutes before they shipped

>> No.8545101

I had like 6 bonehead souls by playing the game normally. If there's something you want to complain about AoS it's how clunky doing the movement options are, because you have to shift through the soul menu every time you want to pick what movement option you want. Based anon. COTM mixes the new metroidvania style with some classic difficulty. Some of the bosses in COTM are actually hard. And the arena is brutal since it relies completely on dodging and attacking capabilities with no magic.

Even before that soul you move in a less clunky way than in Cotm - you have to factor not just the speed of the character but also how big the castle is and how far areas are spread apart - AOS has like 5 times more warp points and with size of the areas even at soma's jogging speed moving doesnt annoy you at all, while in COTM which has just five teleports and clunkier movement even the running shoes wont help. The fact that you get black panther and superjump near the end of aos makes completing game 100% much less of a hassle since you can breeze through unexplored areas and so on. I know aos is no masterpiece but its much more enjoyable.
I like COTM, card system is one of better systems in metroidvanias but the game has a lot of grind going on, and the art style is much worse than the rest of the games. I know, you'll say aos is grindy too because of all the souls, but almost nobody needs all of the souls to enjoy the game - chaos ring is an overkill award - while in cotm you rarely have most of the cards and it decreases enjoyment of the game since cards are much more substantial than souls which are mostly just sprite/stat swaps
HoD is a fine game, i liked the music for chiptune flavour, but the spellbook, although not blatantly bad, is probably the least stimulating of systems - it has neither substance of DSS nor the variety and collectathon of souls

You move plenty fast in CotM, and a lot of areas on the map have shortcuts to backtrack to where you need faster. The double tap isn't a big deal, though admittedly future rereleases could just autorun. I prefer the smaller sprites that made the castle larger as it allowed for more platforming and places to explore on a single loading screen.
>Cards are grindy
They are, to the point I believe they didn't even intend to get them all in a single playthrough, instead serving as a method to add variance in each run. Then if you really wanted to playtest certain cards magician mode starts you with all of them.
That said, they should've just given the player the option being to start on Normal or Thied mode from the get go, so if you could handle the extra difficulty you would be rewarded with reasonable drop rates. And then upon beating the game you unlock Wizard mode, Fighter Mode, and Shooter mode all at once to give the player access to the bonus modes faster.
>HoD
It's alright but it loses it's appeal once you have to start actually repeating zones. Has the funnest movement until you jump, but unfortunately the game never really gives you much to utilize it fully. The spellbooks are absolutely busted but that's fine, the game is already easy, so might as well go full power fantasy. Easily the weakest of the GBA trilogy but it's not nearly as bad as everyone claims
