854007 No.854007 [Reply] [Original]

Just wanted to say that I've just bought Dragon Quest VI (DS), Dragon Quest 8 (PS2) and Dragon Quest 9 (DS).
I'm really happy because the DQ-games are rather rare in my country.

So let's do a Dragon Quest thread to celebrate.

>> No.854016

Just so you know.
I've completed DQ IV and V through Flashcard in the ds.
And I've completed Dragon Quest IV about 70% I think.
And I'm 17h in Dragon Quest 9.
I haven't played Dragon Quest 8 at all.
But I love the series

>> No.854024

The rather low drop-rate at the moment in Dragon Quest 9 is a bit of a chore, but I'll fight through it with mindless grinding while watching a movie or something.

Oh, is there someone who can explane the DQVC in Stoneway (?) tavern for me?

I wanna start playing Dragon Quest.
Should I start from the first one or can I just start playing from a random/the best entry?

>> No.854039

Dragon Quest IV - VI is the zenithian trilogy. They share a similar story. (Similar as in Final Fantasy has their element-crystals in several of their games)
Those games are really good I think.
V having one of the best stories for me anywhere, immersive and real.

>> No.854043

>>854032

Dragon Quest 1+2 on the GBC is a good starting place, but 3 is probably the best place to start.

>>854039

5 is a great game, one of my favorite RPGs ever. Nothing gets me more hype than having an entire family fighting together.

>> No.854070

I'm not getting "as" hooked with Dragon Quest 9 as I got with Dragon Quest V.
The low framerate when you have a full party is rather annoying.
Don't know why, the story is good so far, but Dragon Quest V is just so amazingly good, hard to top it really.

Let me be blunt for a second.

What exactly makes DQ7 good?
I want to play the game and a motivation boost would be nice.

>> No.854080

>>854070

I'm not a super huge fan of 9, personally. It feels too much like an MMO to me, especially the postgame. The story is okay, reminds me of 3, but overall I felt it left me a little unsatisfied.

>> No.854083

I would guess the role you take. Not necessarily the gameplay or pacing of the game.

>> No.854087

>>854080
Dragon Quest 9 have everything that makes a Dragon Quest-game.
But, yeh, it's just something about it that's not as appealing as the other games.

>> No.854085

>>854076
First, I should ask: how many other DQ games have you played? DQ7 is really for the hardcore DQ fans.

That said, I like 7 because of the individual stories that link up together as you get further along in the game and I like the class system. I'm currently playing the game and closing in on the end of disc 1.

>> No.854101

>>854087

I also feel like the combat is a bit slow. In the other games, it's extremely fast: the battles are in first person, and there aren't any super flashy effects. With 9, you have to wait for your characters to run to the enemy and swing, etc. That's not a bad thing, but it slows the game down a bit.

>> No.854106

>>854101
Yes! The battles are sooo slow. It takes such a long time for your characters to align themselfs before they strike. So the time you spend in battle really bog down the overall reaction to the game.

Why GBC?

>> No.854204

>>854195

The GBC versions reduce the grind significantly and updates the graphics. I think there's also an SNES port of each, but I'm not sure how good they are. DQ3 should be played on GBC, as well.

I to VI. Been playing the entire series for the first time and greatly enjoying them, amazing how each game had something that made me fell in love.
DQVII comes next, but I'm lacking the motivation right now, I hope I'm not burned out.

There are certain places where you can harvest materials too, but it still takes a long time. I wouldn't suggest trying to 100% it, because it'll take a VERY long time.

I'm 13 hours into DQVI, second time playing it because my save disappeared for some reason, I just finished the Isle o'smiles quest and just love that one NPC speech about the importance of happiness:
"I reckon there's a lesson in this. Try to hunt for your happiness in your own life rather than skedaddle to some fantasy island."
"What kinda happiness could ya find in a phony paradise, anyway? Phony happiness, that's what."
I just love these little lessons in vidya.

As far as DQ1+2, the Gameboy version and the SNES version are essentially the same expect for graphics and sound. The GB version was released in the US and has an official translation. The SNES version wasn't released outside Japan, and the fan translated version is okay, although it has a few bugs. Either one is fine if you don't want to experience the grindy-ness of the originals.

For the DQ3 remakes, there's a few differences, the GB version has "monster medals" that you collect from monsters, and has a bonus dungeon where you need to use those medals. The SNES version doesn't have the monster medals, but it has it's own post-game bonus dungeon that's different from the GB one. The SNES remake also looks really, really good, it was the last DQ for the SNES, coming out after DQ6, and it has a really well done fan-translation. So personally I'd recommend it over the GB version.

It's a bloody shame we aren't getting VII in America. We had to get either Bravery Default or VII. Not both. Fuck Square and their bias against America and towards Final Fantasy. IX is a joy to play along with the Monsters titles. I gotta continue VI and VIII, though the latter isn't really my forte. Not a fan of the slowed down gameplay due to the voice acting and the ridiculous amount of enemies in each fight.

But that title isn't retro. Years ago, I played the Dragon Quest I+II remake. I only beat I and got stuck in a tower on II.

It's a proper DQ game, it has great characters, great music, a class system like DQVI's.

AND it's THE longest JRPG, period. Not many people ahve beaten it. Seriosuly, most people who talk about it at length and know a lot about it haven't actually beaten the damn thing. It's neither tedious nor bad, it's just that damn long.

Meanwhile, it might do good to wait for the 3DS remake, because it's shaping up nicely. If you have a 3DS or are planning to buy one, of course.

NOPE. Red slime hits him. "Check yourself before you wreck yourself, slime." Tries to run again. NOPE. Down to 2 HP now. "DUDE what the FUCK." Attacks the slime. Miss. 1 HP left. Tries to run again. NOPE.

Nintendo handled the localization of most of the DS DQ games. It will be them localizing it if anything.
