Did you know that there was a Spider-Man video game developed by Rare? With an OST composed by David Wise aswell! I know this is before Rare became what we're more familiar with, it was still 1990, but it's still interesting. Overall it's nothing too special, but considering the limitations of the original Game Boy this isn't too surprising, it's a standard side-scrolling beat 'em up, with some platforming too at times, it controls decently even with the few action buttons available, and let's you do most of what you'd expect Spider-Man to do, like the web-slinging which does feel good here, for the time at least. I'm getting filtered though, you have 3 lives and 3 continues, and you always respawn back to where you were instead of going back to a checkpoint or the start of the level, which seems good, but a single hit takes a lot of health away, and there are few invincibility frames from what I can tell, also the birds on the Doc-Ock level are unironically the toughest enemies here, and it has some tough platforming too, I can't beat this level yet, so I might use save states just to finish it really.

P.S. A thread decidated to just a single obscure title seems a bit excessive to me, so let's make this a general Spider-Man thread instead.

Had no idea this was by Rare, but I had this game as a kid and I never cared much for it. Especially the climbing stages.

like all the games my poor ass had as a kid, i eventually learned how to beat this game, but i don't remember a lot about it
i remember punching a lot of birds
i remember saving up my webs for bosses because you could just spam ultrapowerful screen-filling attacks for a while to wear them down
i remember the high jump was finicky and most of my deaths came from doing a normal jump when trying to a do a high jump

OP here, just beat it with save states, I know most will say that I didn't really beat it, and I think you're right about it, but what counts most to me was the experience, maybe I'll try a run without them later, but for now I'm satisfied, especially because I did not abuse them or anything, only saved when a level started and before bosses too, because a lot of the bosses are really troublesome and difficult.

I really like the early levels, the only level I could not stand was the final one, for plenty of reasons. The climbing sections were fine, at first I couldn't beat the 2nd one, but staying fixed to the left side of the screen helped. Most of the bosses were fine, but Scorpion, Doc-Ock and Venom I really can't figure out, the punching range is too small so you have to get too close. With Doc-Ock I spammed the webs.

I'd say that this really isn't anything special, you're not missing out on anything if you decide not to play it, but there is a lot to like here, it looks good for a Game Boy title, the OST is excelent, the controls aren't good, but are easy to understand, it did what a 1990 handheld Spider-Man should do, a side-scrolling beat 'em up with platforming, with his super hero powers and super villains too.

Fun game.
Had it when I was a kid but could never get to the Doc Ock fight.
Still loved playing it up to that part over and over though.

I had this as a kid and finished it eventually. One of those games that somehow falls into your lap as a kid and you have NO idea where it came from. I never asked for it and my parents never bought it. It's like getting a hand me down from some random unknown person, friend of a friend perhaps or one of your moms friends kids.

Correct. Most recently, see the people currently retroactively seething over the amount Microsoft paid for Rare compared to modern acquisitions.
