I believe it, not that they're ground breaking or the best but that the listed devs would pick these titles. Bit surprising how many Japanese devs picked Zelda, I would've expected a lot more cases of Western devs picking Zelda and Japanese devs picking Ultima and Wizardry, and there's indeed some of that going on but a surprising amount of Japanese devs went with Zelda.

As far as I'm concerned he's right, the first DQ isn't the best game even in it's own series, your /v/ boogeyman hunt is ridiculous. It's influence and impact on the Japanese gaming scene is beyond any grand statement I can make but for a personal best game it's a terrible pick, it looks like Tetsuya wasn't completely blinded by his nostalgia goggles either because he went with DQ III instead which I think makes more sense. I guess he must have also been ignorant of the first game's historical context. So is Yuji Horii who went with Wizardry and Ultima, wonder who that guy is, must have been a retard to not pick the first DQ huh.

>> No.8537021

>outside of biased nostalgia
That's literally what it is though. It's their personal favorites. Most of those games clearly came out years before the developers started making games, so they're games they loved when they were younger and which had a big impact on them. If someone asks you your favorite game, do you tell them the most recent one you loved or the one which you played the longest and loved the most when you were young?

cinematic platformers have weird alien control schemes that at very foreign to the way we play games these days. the tight responsive controls of the mega man's of the world won out over the flashbacks of the world and it's kind of a relic from the 90's, a parallel vision of how the gaming industry could have gone.

It's because no one wants to name a sequel unless it doesn't have a number in the title. It makes you sound not cool, because sequels feel inherently cheaper. That's why so many franchises across all forms of media constantly do shit like "Alien, Aliens, Alien: Resurrection." No one in that picture named a single game with a prosaic sequel number in the title. Why would anyone pick Diablo 1? Civilization 1?
