90's FPS general. Talk about your favourites, lesser known titles and gems. Just keep Doom in the Doom general thread.

I've recently gotten into Powerslave aka Exhumed, on PC. Not to misunderstood with the PSX and Saturn versions which are a whole different game with the same assets (I've heard it's like Metroid Prime before Metroid Prime but I haven't played it yet so I can't tell).

Anyway, at first Powerslave feels sloppy. The controls feel dated because, unlike say Doom, Duke3D or most other FPS of the time, if you play them with WASD controls they rock even more; but that's not the case with Powerslave. Playing with default or WASD controls hardly make a difference due to how strafing works : when strafing you can't go in diagonal and also strafing slows you down a lot. Also there is no auto-run button.

The shooting itself is only okay. There is a definite lack of variety both in terms of weapons at your disposal and in terms of enemies too. Enemies patterns are very simple too.
However gameplay is still somehow intense because you can't save within levels, instead there is a console-game-like system with checkpoints and lives. So, dying is actually more a threat than with save systems. You can use powerful and useful items to help you.

However that's in terms of level design that the game shines and becomes a gem. Sure, architecture is rather simple and it's not very varied and there is plenty of misaligned textures; but what makes this game stand-out is the levels layout. You know the type of unrealistic maze-like level design so characterisc of FPS of the early 90's ? Well, Powerslave is at AT ITS FINEST. I keep getting more and more blown away by the smart level layouts level after level; plus it makes use of plenty of Build engine effects and the levels re-shape as you're playing. If you like this kind of level layout this game is a must play.

I heard it's more like a first person adventure game with shooting elements. I've also heard that level design is a hub system where you gotta find items and backtrack to reach new areas (like finding special boots, backtracking and using them to be able to walk on lava and reach a new zone, etc)

but again i've never played it much

Well on the subject of nonsensical levels, I've been giving ROTT a fair playthrough on hardest with no cheats as Lorelei, the opposite of how I used to. It's hard, and at times annoying when you're stuck to bullets and enemies have too much health. But it's fun to blow enemies away with the missile weapons, and I like how the levels are designed with unusual obstacles, they're also fun and challenging.

This is the first person shooter compilation torrent. I am currently working on an update, which includes both the PSX version and a new DOS version of Powerslave/Exhumed(BECAUSE THE ONE I INCLUDED DID NOT INCLUDE MUSIC), a hefty portion of Amiga shooters, and a few other Build engine games such as WW2 GI, and NAM. Currently seeking the game Extreme Paintbrawl and any new titles I may have missed to be included in the next update, and hopefully some full versions of included demos in the torrent. Probably going to be mainly an RPG first person torrent though(however I haven''t compiled a list of names for this yet), because I cannot think of too many more FPS games to fill up the size I want the torrent to be, and also because I already included a few RPGs in the previous torrent so I have to make one for it!

May even create a torrent for early (1996 - 2002) three dimensional shooters such as Quake and Unreal, but no guarantees.

I love Powerslave too. I wish there was a modification to make strafing more useful, but it is still a fun game. The actual strafe button is 'kind of' useful, because you strafe at full speeds, but cannot turn while you are strafing (so when assigned to capslock it doesn't work as you would like it to). This is just one of those games that are better off without a mouse as well, as it turns and strafes much more smoothly on the keyboard. I find it is best to reconfigure the games controls so that "A" and "D" turn instead of strafe, and reconfigure strafe to "shift"(because when you strafe, is uses the turn keys). I hear the Playstation and Saturn versions are the best, I hope to be able to enjoy those soon.

>>856319
>sequel to Blood any good.
Not in the way you love Blood, no. I won't say if it is a good or a bad game, because to each their own, but it definitely could have been better. The levels are boring and linear, the weapons weren't too interesting or satisfying, everything is slow, and the AI wasn't too impressive either.

For OP's post, my favorite obscure shooters would have to be Rebel Moon, Quiver, Eradicator, CyberMage, and CyClones. I have played a good amount of games, but these are the ones that stuck. I hope I get the time to complete them.

Well, improved gameplay along with swell level layout is better than mediocre gameplay with swell level layout. It also has different levels on the console version, with better graphics and is supposedly more action focused. Not likely. Remember that prior to Half-Life, FPS games generally copied Doom's formula. The closest you might get is Strife.

>>858093
Pretty much this. The game was good, but it inspired over a decade of undesired titles (at least to me). I remember when I first played Half Life, I was extremely bored and wasn't sure what was going on because I wasn't used to the in-game cinematic. It took me a few years later to finally try the game again, because the "forced to stop moving" didn't appeal to me then (and still didn't).

>I'm of the opinion that Half-Life is why FPS games went to shit. It might not be a bad game itself, but it was the beginning of the "cinematic" bullshit that ruined the genre.

Totally agree. Don't get me wrong, HL1 is a great game, when it came out I was on a holiday, all I did was play it during 3 days until I beat it. It took me that long because each loading time would take 5 minutes (even quicksaves) and also because I lost a lot of progress when quicksavescumming and fucked myself in a part where I had 3hp left and you have to fall down a ledge which takes you 5hp so I had to start over. After beating it I played it again from start on a higher difficulty. It was that good.

I especially like the first act of the game (up until you reach the surface and meet the first grunts) because of how survival horror-ish it is.

But it's true that it shifted the genre completly. When it came out, everybody praised it for 3 things : realism, artificial intelligence of the human enemies, and story with "CUTSCENES DURING WHICH YOU CAN MOVE HOLY SHIT". That's when nobody started to care about music, smart unrealistic level design (which is all I love about Powerslave) and monsters to shoot with cool weapons.

and even though it still had incredibly fun deathmatch, it also spawned counter strike and make team fortress more popular.

And now I miss the pre-HL1 era. At least it set WASD+mouse controls as standars (even though it was far from the first to use them) and that's something we still haven't looked back on and which I even use for pre-HL1 fps.

While it had 'more' intricate hub world, half life doesn't play too differently from it's base, Quake gameplay wise more or less jump puzzles and make to the end gameplay, though half life has broken AI and worse hit detection. Half Life has 'hubbish' design but isn't really meant to be played like a hub world so much. Quake 2 integrates hub like play where you have to come back and fourth a bit.
Strife is hub like, but plays more like doom than half life or quake.
Some people have said Deus Ex, but deus ex isn't even remotely like half life in any respect other than mouths move when people speak and terrible AI for other reasons. But it's not hubbish and the gameplay isn't even remotely similar. System Shock/2 is hub like they don't really play like half life though but they a bit less inept at combat and stealth than Deus Ex.

no one posted SiN, i am sad.

this is a fantastic game with excellent voice acting and great dialogue. plot is somewhat cheesy but passable. level design is varied and well done: indoors, streets, underwater, sewers, and geothermal plant to name a few.

there are a few secrets and secondary objectives in each level, which may elucidate the plot and sometimes trigger a different path or change how a future level is played.

guns are ok. ai sucked shit though.

game is pretty damn hard on the hardest setting, mostly due to how UNFAIR some parts are (think trapped in an elevator with a cyberdemon unfair).

there's a multiplayer mode but i never played it.

all in all great game. there are torrents of it and it can be bought on steam if you feel like it.

Yeah, Quake 2's music is great. It fits the fast paced action really well. The whole game is fantastic, I only discovered it a couple of years ago and it felt like re-discovering a gem such as Doom or Duke3D; couldn't believe I missed it all these years.

Ground Zero is more high quality and closer to the original game. The other add-on pack was ok but added those fucking annoying Phalanx enemies which basically had shields with fuck-huge health and took forever to kill.

The Quake add-on packs were pretty cool as well actually. The best old FPS expansion pack I've played is Wages of SiN for (take a wild guess) Opposing Force is close though, but Wages of SiN was just fucking awesome.

I see a few people mentioning CyberMage. I have the CD version somewhere.

One of the first things that stands out about it is how buggy the damn game is. Moving forward + a certain power causes the game to hard lock requiring a reset; how that made it through QA is anyone's guess. The game would sometimes just lock up for now reason whatsoever.

The music is interesting, but technical nonsense gets in the way again. When you start playing, the music starts from the beginning of the sound track every time. In order to hear some of the more interesting pieces, you have to leave the game on for a while.

Despite the aggravation, it had a lot of things going for it, and some features that were ahead of its time.
The level art style had a huge variety from sewers, to castles, to cities of the burning and non-burning variety, this game took you places. The level design itself wasn't bad other than some platforming and some mazes (expected of FPS games at the time).
It had limited RPG elements. Eating the souls of enemies would grow your mage.
There was a limited hub/open world.
The game had non-enemy NPCs, which was amazing at the time.
There were even a few vehicle sections with some clunky shootouts.

CyberMage has tons of comic book charm if you can get past how poorly built the game is.

The harder difficulties are fucking bullshit. They not only increase the number of enemies, but also increase the number of shots to kill them. It makes those guys fucking impossible. I tried the third difficulty at first, only to switch down to the second when it took me a good 30-odd shots to down one of those brown mutants at close range.

I've beaten it on 4, but I had to be insanely careful. The problem with both Blake Stone is that it's hard to be quick with aiming and strafing.

There are a few. Some are Bad Toys 3D, Escape From Monster Manor, Faceball 2000, H.U.R.L., Jumping Flash, Kens Labyrinth, Nitemare 3D, and Super Noahs Ark 3D, but then again this is a subjective subject, and your experience may vary.

Wasn't some remake of Wolfenstein like this?

I wouldn't say that ROTT was bad, but having unlimited ammunition took away a lot of the challenge. At least the weapons were pleasing, and never running out of bullets allowed me to enjoy the shooting more than I should have.

So I finished Powerslave/Exhumed on PC and I've considering playing the console versions (which are whole different games).

I read/watched a few things about them and apparently even between the 2 console versions (PSX and Saturn) there are some notable differences such as 4 or 5 levels which are completely different. I'd like to play the Saturn version, I have it but in PAL so I'd rather not play in 50hz; but Saturn emulation is kinda bad... anybody played it on emulation, was it playable and if so with which saturn emulator?

Its rather simple to get them to work, you've gotta look at it like Wolf 3D modding where theres no built-in option for custom content but instead you have to go through the rigorous process of dummying and masking in game files to get custom maps and content to work properly

Basically each and every blood mod requires you to install a new copy of blood (along with the mod in question) and usually requires you to run the game from said mod's .bat file to get it to replace the content and run properly

Its shit like this that really makes me wish that Atari would get off their fucking ass and release the source code, so that I don't have like 30 different installs of one-unit whole blood for each and every damn blood mod

Started playing the PSX version of Powerslave emulated on ePSXe. So far I'd say that the game is really great and impressive for Playstation due to how smooth and gorgieous it is. Lighting and controls are really good too, it plays surprinsgly well for a console FPS.

However so far I'd say that level design isn't as interesting as the PC game, but I haven't played much.

so with old FPS games, I feel like they expect you to use your keyboard this way. I don't see it being very comfortable and instead used the right side. How did you play these games?

>> No.881204

>>881189
You used the CTRL, ALT, and SHIFT on the left side of the keyboard with your left hand.

This was before we had good mouse support w/ freelook, and WASD.

I think around strife, duke and quake they started using the right side thought since asdzxc were used for more functions? Also with Heretic having the look functions on the del/end/pgdwn did they use that block or did they want you to use the numpad versions of those?

For qwerty boards, the keys you mention are on the left side so keeping the left hand on that side only makes even more sense since there is less reaching to those keys.

If the game didn't have proper mouse + freelook support (which wasn't until Q1 or HL1), I almost never used the view angle keys unless absolutely necessary. Most 2.5D shooters at the time usually accommodated for enemies of different heights by automatically aiming up or down within the view screen.

Total newfag here regarding dosbox. I want to play heretic, I've got the directories set up and can run the autoexec just fine, but when I do so it is giving me some shit about the soundblaster or something. it says "set blaster=a220 i7 d1 h5 t6", and I read up how to config those setting, but the thing I don't get is that the settings its telling me match the default setting displayed whenever I first start dosbox.

For those people talking about Ken Silverman, I was recently reading some interviews with him, and it's fucking depressing. He was basically demoralized out of the business once Quake came out, and thought he could never mach the tech. So since Build he's basically been a shut-in other than helping part time at his dad's lab at Brown.

He also said Carmack emailed him a couple years ago to see if he wanted to work at iD and he shot him down, saying he didn't want to move to Texas.

He could have been great imo.

I think Ken Silverman helps the people working on the sourceport of Duke3D from times to times. He doesn't have to feel bad imo, he made a great engine which is a lot of fans favourite which spawned plenty of great official release and is still spawning endless quality user content. Plus the engine is still being improved on.
