It's not even that bad, as far as slightly janky early 3D action games go. 2D Castlevania just left a very high standard to match. If you were playing games like Tomb Raider, or Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire at the time, there's not a huge difference in quality.

I thought this was one of the best parts of the game, but I've heard a lot of people complain.

>>8521776
>ranged weapon
Yeah, if you get lucky and hit him a lot. He casts Mirror Image right away, and he's actually a pretty high level mage, so he gets a ton of images. Then he crowd controls your whole party. On some runs, if I don't get him in the first few seconds, it's over - and I know the game inside and out. The most reliable option is probably to use Imoen's Wand of Magic Missiles on him right away, since it's a guaranteed hit and might interrupt his casting.
>sleep
I think a lot of new players greatly underestimate that spell.

Yeah, this one was utter bullshit. Only one chance to grab it, and it's at the very beginning before you even know hidden chests are a thing, nor would you even think to try to get up there by jumping on fucking Toad's head. Literally the only in-game clue you get that there's something in that room is with the Signal Ring, which you get near the end of the game. Only reason I knew of it was because a magazine told me.

Imagine playing this back when it came out. You play most of the game, get the ring, explore the entire world to see if you can find chests, and you get a clue that there's something in that room, but you jump on literally every tile and come up short. What are you supposed to make out of that? Literally what were they thinking?

>rapidly hit quicksave and quickload with shaky hands
>miss the jump
>quicksave mid flight to the bottom
>quickload for 2 minutes straight hoping that it will magically unquicksave it
The frame that it loads back is burned into my mind forever, just thinking about it makes me sad again.
The end fight is worse by far, but that quicksave fiasco makes me triple check if I'm pressing load instead of save in every game 20 years and counting.

I just did this recently and ended up doing the opposite. Shotgun was ideal but I found the pistol to be the most useful.
I used the shotgun for crowds after kiting them into a group, especially with the ones that explode. But the revelation that the pistol can remove their arms in just a few shots was a big deal. From a distance you could (actually) disarm them which prevents them from shooting and/or punching.

The AR is good for the little guys though. All in all a long and hard mission no matter how you take it.It just keeps going. And you seemingly never have the gun/ammo you want.
I don't think it's a bad mission, just a tough one. A little frustrating on legendary.

first pic is the entrance to a dungeon that ends in a boss fight that constantly peppers your party with breath or quake attacks that does a ton of damage relative to the level you're bound to fight it at, and party-wide heals aren't a thing yet.

second pic is an optional area that ends in a surprise boss fight. How you answer the questions before entering decides how much HP is sapped from your party before the fight begins. Said boss hits fast and hard, and again: no party-wide heal. Ending the boss battle quickly is the only recourse. A clever player would wait until after getting the frog character, giving access to another optional area nearby to get the main protag a new devastating attack (that he can only use once per battle). And even then you'd be lucky to win without losing a party member.

>> No.8525034

>>8522672
yeah that probably took me somewhere between 30 and 100 tries to beat back in the day, though it's kind of funny that the main thing that makes that fight hard or not is having the right Keyblade equipped, most of the really strong ones you have access to at that point have relatively short blade lengths, which makes it harder to counter his strikes, if you equip Metal Chocobo which has the longest blade in the game(aside from maybe Ultima Weapon) it becomes a lot easier to deflect his attacks even though on paper it's weaker than several of your other blades

Not to mention abilities.
Just having Guard and Counterattack alone makes the fight a cake walk since the majority of Riku's attacks can be blocked/parried and he rarely ever switches up his attack patterns, while also having MP Haste and/or Rage to recover MP. Being a stupid kid that I was, I button mashed my way through the game up until this point, then got filtered.

the explosions also just did damage in a certain radius regardless of any walls, so I'd throw then on sharp corners and thin walls and people kept getting blown up by mines they couldn't even see
in perfect dark throwing laptop gun sentries on the ground under ramps so people had to get shot while they ducked down to even be able to aim at them was fun too

I'll never beat Spider-Man (PS1) 100% because of a single costume, the Quick-Change one, because the developers thought 10.000 points in the Zip-Line Training was a reasonable requirement. It was changed in the PC and Dreamcast versions to 7.500, which is a score I've reached many times on the PS1, but sadly it isn't enough there, and it's the version I want to beat 100% because it's the one I grew up with. Ultima is a silly spell that trivializes an already easy game, and you can easily do tons of damage without it.

Meanwhile, the Illumina (what you get from betting the Ragnarok) allows you to deck out one of four characters with 128 MBlock while still being able to equip the Gem Box AND do auto-criticals. You'd be a fool to pass that up.

I've never thought about that. It's so obvious now, but at least it complements the difficulty of quick-loading well.
>Oh, you want to just save-and-load past everything? Then you better be precise as well, since you're basically doing a segmented run.
>Are you using checkpoints and save points? Fine, then we'll adjust the difficulty dynamically to keep it fun.
It's so perfect.

I posted Metropolis Zone not because it's actually hard or anything, but because the enemy placement is extremely dickish and annoying. Most people can agree on that.

doing it wrong
walk off the pipe going right and just start running when your feet touch that first pillar, and then jump from the second

trying to reach full momentum from that position in the pic is too risky

The best part was I didn't know selecting "continue" here after a game over would start me from the entrance instead of all the way back at Zelda like it usually does. I kept reloading my save so I could collect the extra lives again, so I had to do the whole gauntlet back to the temple every time.

I just find it slightly tedious more than anything now, but my very first time playing this game was on my cousin's copy back in the day, on a save file that wasn't his own to begin with, that just so happened to have stopped in the middle of playing through the Water Temple, so we were confused as fuck as to where to go. It took us like a week to figure it out.

I might have used Jump to skip them then, once I had maxed ability levels I didn't bother with enemies much. I do remember how I had to map out the correct path to get to the end boss, otherwise you just waste time and strength on dead end traps.

I don't know what they were thinking with leaving this boss like it was on the Game Gear, it was much more manageable on the Master System, but here they didn't even attempt to accomodate it to the smaller resolution at all.
