The art of print ads is long dead which is a shame because back in the day you had to convey what a game was all about and also be eye catching with no sound or video. What are your favorite magazine advertisements? The ones that really sold you on the game. Working Designs always had great ones. Some of the ads were better than the games themselves.

I wonder if there would be any money in cutting ads like this out of all my old game magazines and selling them on Etsy or something.

Pretty sure the magazines would be worth more

I'd pay no more than a nickel for a magazine page.
Maybe if it was like a high definition framed poster I'd actually think about parting with more than 10 dollars.

I didn't know the game existed until I saw this in Official PlayStation Magazine and had to have it.

I love Star Ocean 2, but this advertisement is pretty hyperbolic. Characters can feel and think for themselves? Intense polygonal battles? 80 endings? I feel like every claim here needs an asterisk.

You didn't know that everyone lied in advertising about videogames back in the day?

This, lol. Militant keyboard warriors on Twitter didn’t exist back then, so people were much more forgiving of hype. Also, only a fucking retard would blindly believe the shit they printed in the advertisements, but better ads definitely sold games.

They aren't really lies, just very extreme ways to describe features like Private Actions.

Wild that they solved general artificial intelligence just for this game.

Not even a game advert. Literally asking for professional resumes.

Squaresoft had some really good ones.

Albert Odyssey was a pretty good jrpg from what I recall, a bit generic perhaps but the translation/localisation had some funny moments and charm to it. One of the occasions were adding jokes into the translation that were not in the original, or just changing dialog a bit in general to make it more humorous actually worked in the games favour.

Enemy that never appears in game? Check.
