For me, it's crt deluxe geom. It's the phosphor decay. It's a subtle detail not many shaders go for, and most definitely happens on real CRTs.

I feel CRT curvature effects are misguided. Not hating on the people who want to use them, but I think the deal with them is when I did play on an actual curved CRT, my brain filtered it out and learned to see the picture as a square whole, eliminating the perception of curvature. When it's done in software, the visual distortion is unavoidable.

Similarly, I've been using a large concave curved monitor for several years now. I got used to it in about a week. I don't see the curvature at all anymore, everything looks perfectly straight, and I don't even notice it's curved unless I stand up and look at it from an odd angle. I was a little worried buying one of these things at first wondering if it was just a "meme" but I actually prefer it now.

Why's it always gotta be A *or* B? If the filtered version is too blurry or obnoxious looking, start tweaking it. A little bit of scanline/grid/phosphor effect can go a long way, it doesn't need to look like a digicam photo of a print magazine.

That's probably down to the NES's composite signal than it being played on a CRT. Probably Blargg's NTSC filter or one of the many NTSC shaders can replicate this.

CRTs are brighter than the majority of LCDs to begin with. Adding scanlines and masks will, of course, darken the picture further, and lord help you if you want to add black frame insertion into the mix to match a CRT's motion clarity. Only way to counteract this is with brighter HDR screens, and those are quite a bit more expensive at this point.

>> No.8512347

>>8512308

Shaders darken the picture unless you compensate with higher gamma/brightness/contrast. Still, there is a certain nuance to the glow of a CRT in which is can both output a bright image but also keep the contrast between colors low so that they neither bloom like a motherfucker or become so dark that you can't see shit.
This >>8507197 is the closest I could get to my own CRT's brightness with Royale so far, and even then it's "flattening" the bright colors and making them a bit hard to tell apart. This can be fixed if I raise the bloom underestimation but it'll also, well, add too much bloom.

I've been playing around with newpixie lately.
I know it's not very CRT-accurate, but I like the look.
It adds some kinda "depth" that I can't quite understand.

Also, RetroArch is a piece of shit these days on my hardware. Pain in the ass. Which is the reason I was too lazy to crop the images before but then again, that wasn't usually necessary until now. You can record videos with RA as well but GPU recording after upscaling and shading is hardware intensive while doing it before has no real performance impact. That setting is under Settings > Recording > Use GPU Recording

In theory. But I've seen that stuff and it just can't output as high. Technically it could but the organic medium in the OLEDs would break down too fast, so there's limits. Remember, tube TVs come from an age when no one gave a shit about carbon footprints. BLAST LIGHT OUT! They're so bright people erroneously believe they destroy the eyes with radiation.
OLED has issues that make it no better than LCD sadly. Namely cost and lifespan. My next monitors will be OLEDs though.

Still got my 2003 Trinitron though, sitting right behind me. It's still so good. PS3 games look awesome on it, despite not being HD. And it weighs a ton even at 20". I've busted 2 40" Samsung LCDs in the last decade from accidentally yanking wires. A hard fart knocks a modern flat screen off a stand. That fucking trinitron will break a wire or connection(easily repaired) before being yanked off the stand. I miss heavy, well-built goods.

I'm with you there, I prefer just cranking up the resolution for 3D games unless the emulator just doesn't play nice with upresing.
For example Saturn games I will play at native resolution with shaders because upscaling them looks hideous and results in a lot of graphical bugs.

I'd also argue that fifth generation games can look better at native resolution and shaders than when upscaled. I still tend to upscale them though.
However, sixth generation games just objectively look better upscaled. Same for 3D arcade games, especially Sega Model 2 and 3 games.

>> No.8528448

>>8528440
My problem with upscaling 6th gen games is it tends to to cause artificating with 2D elements like huds (super monkey ball for example is terrible about this), or if they don't get awful seams then they're still blurry as heck and clash against the uprezzed visuals

Parallel has a nifty option for rendering hud elements at native rez even when upscaling. I wish dolphin has a similar feature

I agree with you that the worst part about upscaling sixth gen games is that the UI can often look rather distracting when there's seams and artifacts (this is a problem I most commonly run into with PCSX2), but Super Monkey Ball is an example where I actually never felt bothered by the UI.
Sure, it looks low rest compared to the rest of the game, but not enough to be terribly distracting to me.

Either way it's a trade-off and I almost always will pick higher resolution over the UI looking a bit shite.

>> No.8529175

Upping resolution doesn't help how flat the lighting looks and how plain the textures, both of which a CRT shader can mitigate.

I still up the resolution unless I can downsample, and CRT shader also helps to make higher res stuff less jarring against the less improved aspects of the image (like the HUD examples).

Ultimately shaders are for people who like new games, and old games when they were new. If you are senile and prefer outdated shit completely, then you may as well go raw and native for the ultimate retrograde aesthetic.

It's royale with ntsc-adaptive prepended to the xm29 preset with its own settings commented out and the LUT replaced by the ntsc color shader. I'm too lazy to tweak it and I don't know if those ntsc shaders are at the right position either. Have a go at it if you want:
https://files.catbox.moe/mjari9.glslp
It goes into the first shader folder of the RA directory. If you need the slangp just search & replace all instances of glsl with slang. Using the slang version adds another video mode to the NTSC shader and changes the default svideo mode set in this preset since the numbering is different. I don't remember exactly since I can' get the damn Vulkan mode to work anymore with the AppImage of RA.
