its not a fully bad game,it just aged really really poorly,at least when compared to PC contemporaries.
simply changing the controls to something usable takes away almost all the difficulty, and there are no real "sourceports" to introduce the game to a modern audience (1964 kinda does this, but not very well) with modern features.

it's funny how quake was seen as "the multiplayer one, also fast" when not only is classic arena deathmatch almost dead but the resurgence of quake is more about its single player where people eithe make maps doing stuff with the game's components or even have custom stuff like weapons and enemies
so it's similar with doom's case
makes me think "variety" is just the stronger key componenet to retro fps than "speed"
variety being either
>events: avoid projectiles, take cover, run, take it low, explore, puzzle

variety and speed can correlate and make nice combinations but still

The latter. Just because it's not true 3D as in Quake doesn't mean that the levels aren't 3D spaces with height, width, and length that the player, enemies, and projectiles (generally) respect. If it weren't 3D you would be able to walk back up the starting ledge on Doom 2 Map01. Autoaim also doesn't ensure that your hitscan will hit a horizontally-aligned target, enemies can be positioned so that you can't autoaim at them, either if they're too far away or the vertical difference is too great for autoaim to take effect.

attempts to make hexen maps haven't really succeeded.

mbf21 however can emulate heretic/hexen weapons and enemies better. there was an mbf21 tech demo that was basically a heretic+doom map, it was pretty cool.

hopefully people can eventually recreate some of that hexen feel.

I prefer it built on doom since ultimately i feel the bestiary and weapons in hexen were a bit limited. the vibe was cool though

These bands were 'sampled' for Doom and Doom 2's music, some more than others, some ending up unused. One track is also based on one from the movie Aliens.
Generally a basic recreation of a song, or a section of a song was made, then it would be used to create a new track. For instance, E2M1's track is based on AC/DC's Big Gun, but only for the main riff, the rest of it is different, and Map 23's track is based on Alice In Chains' Them Bones, but not in entirety, and the main riff's aggressive electric guitar shredding is toned down a lot. Further, Map 01s theme sounds vaguely like Megadeth's Hangar 18, but only a little bit, being actually very different, Map 09's theme ostensibly being based on Stone Temple Pilots' Sex Type Thing, but sounds basically nothing at all like it, and Map 06's theme being identifiably based on the downtempo guitars of Pantera's This Love, but instead making an entire down tempo atmospheric track based entirely on that part, rather than transitioning back and forth between high and low. E2M2 is, if you listen closely, based on Metallica's The Call Of Kthulhu, but VERY subtly, and is really a very different track in the end.

So, there was a lot of 'sampling' in the music, but generally it was pretty transformative. That's also without getting into the various original compositions made for the game.
E1M1 sounds similar to numerous different metal songs before and since, but isn't directly based on any single one of them.

No. The fourth and fifth hubs in Hexen II are way less confusing. The third would be just fine without that stupid dial I mentioned. The fifth hub has one absolute bullshit teleporter that spawns you running off a ledge, you turn as soon as you exit to avoid falling and grab a key item. Also destructible walls are poorly communicated, hitting them only causes a slightly different sound to play and they just break suddenly after a few hits. Nah, I think his combat was still quite influenced by Sunder, but scaled back. Take a room in Sunder, scale it down 2-3x in size and enemy density, and now you can see it's much more Ribbiks-like. Ribbiks definitely has his own style, more experimental, less bound to the grid, but it's still a direct predecessor to Gazebo. I vehemently disagree when people try to downplay how influential Sunder is, or say that only the aesthetics are impressive and its combat sucks. Not at all the case.

The idea would be “switching classes” at the same speed you’d switch a weapon. Similar to a Wizardry or Might & Magic styled first-person party-based dungeon crawler, it’s as if the three classes are changing formation so whoever is “attacking” is whoever is “in front”. No need to resprite anything.
If you want to go balls deep, you could even manage three different health pools; if whoever you play as dies mid-level, maybe have them respawn until you get to the hub/solve puzzles.

>> No.8507513

>>8507446
I think there's a better answer to the issue.
There are a series of different weapons, save for one BFG type weapon, that are all functionally the same.

It would work best outside of a strict melee theme. For example, each class has access to the pistol, shotgun, and chaingun. However, each class has a unique weapon that takes the place of the Plasma gun, that fits into the archetype of that individual class.
Then, each class has a series of spells they can use. They get unlocked over time with a leveling system, and can be used at the same time in tandem with the other weapons. The spells available to each class are completely unique, and encourage the player to fit within a particular playstyle with various buffs, AOE's, and straight damage spells.

For example, the Fighter could have spells that increase their damage output and resistance, as well as ones that slow down enemies or silence them entirely. The Mage could have spells that block enemy pathing, or group them together, along with some good AOE spells that might get more powerful the more enemies on screen or something. The Cleric could have really strong defensive spells, that blow enemies away or pierce them.

I got plans for a three in one class as part of the last update for Combined_Arms, if that's relevant to this current discussion. I'm gonna handle class swapping with the reload and zoom keys, and picking up a weapon will give unique ones to each class.
The current plan with all this is to make the Knight borderline melee only (except when throwing the active weapon) with most of the weapons having a durability meter, though after they break they regenerate like how it's done in Muramasa: The demon blade.
The Thief's gonna have guns, using bullets and shells. Though I need to sit down and figure out some good weapons.
The Mage is gonna have nukes powered by rockets and cells.
Basically I'm gonna treat the 4 Doom ammo types like four separate mana pools, two for the Thief and two for the Mage.

Consider a weapon with an smartgun-esque autoaim window, a really high rate of fire, and some piercing property, maybe for the mage. Exterminates crowds of low-mid tier enemies as quickly as it chews through cells.

it could probably be handled similarly to how the BFG handles its tracers, though there's likely better way. No clue, never tried something like it myself.

Perhaps it's just me paying more attention to it as I was never big on modding/porting, but isn't it getting some kind of resurgence lately across various classic games? I'm not just talking about some goodness like Violent Rumble. Like, Orcs & Humans and Ocarina of Time's reverse engineering, source port for Catacombs, Warcraft 2 got a proper widescreen patch, Quake 2 weapons for original Quake...
Again, that's probably be being clueless all this time, but I wanna know for sure.

Update Quake infographic and maybe look into making one for Wolfenstein 3D? Not sure if there's much going on for it in terms of community stuff, but the game is getting 30 years old this year and I'm sure it will spark some interest from people. At least I know I would as I haven't even finished shareware version a few years back since I played through DOSBox.
Even know I'm not really a fan of Quake 2, but seeing some talks here about how much content for it was lost, maybe someone should consider covering that as well.

Yeah, I know it's hard to balance, but one would figure that if a mod already had a weapon that puts out a huge volume of fire, adding a smartgun-esque function wouldn't make it much more powerful since it would achieve accuracy through volume of fire to begin with.

No, HDest has a thing where if monsters get killed super hard, they have issues reviving, especially Hell Nobles.
These Barons had their asses kicked so hard that they're unable to resurrect correctly. Despite how much Frag energy is in the air trying to pull them back together, that's the green shit you're seeing flying in the air after the Barons die.

They release that shit when they get killed.

There's green sparks of evil magic which fly around in the air sometimes, which will try to resurrect dead bodies to fight against you.
People playing HD the first time and choosing Doom 2 would be in for a real funny surprise in Map 08 when they blast all those Barons, and then the whole level wakes up because each Baron releases four "fragshards" on death. The more fucked up the corpse is, the more shards are needed to properly raise it, what can happen is the body gets back up again for a brief moment, in a weakened and dazed state, but then collapses again, the next time it'll be more able.

To work against this, there's various ways to try to handle corpses to get them out of your hair, such as punting them down pits where they won't be bothering you, shoving them in under a low shelf/ledge where there isn't enough room for them to get up, or plain savaging the corpse, like shoving/dragging it under a door or crusher, or using something like the chainsaw to Evil Dead the body, so that there's more work which needs to be done to fix it.

You can also use the BFG9000 to charge energy cells for no cost, though this agitates fragshards, because the BFG9000 works on devil magic in Hideous Destructor.

At least how I remember it, anyway.
