Symphony of the Night.

Knowing all the broken shit and just how to deal with enemies lets you steam roll it, it's stupidly easy when you know the spells and secrets.

I know that feeling, OP, and it can really be terrible, but it's not all hopeless. When faced with this situation, I feel that the best course of action is to take a long break from playing it, and play something else instead, preferably a lot different genres if you have plenty you enjoy, try getting to whatever's in your backlog. Now, after taking this long break where you played something else, you'll go back to the one you were good at before, and you'll be feeling a bit rusty probably, since you haven't played in a while and your muscle memory isn't as accurate, you'll never face the challenge in the same way it was in your first few playthroughs, but it might be challenging again, more than it is currently anyway.

This is why I demand games with wide playstyle variety so that there's dozens of ways to play through and experience a different way. No matter how easy it's gotten, you're still seeing something new or that you at least haven't seen since 8 playthroughs ago. Stays fresh forever.

Yeah same. Still definitely enjoyable games to relax to, but half the fun of the game was wondering and exploring the levels trying to find everything, and now I know them so well that I practically have every gem location memorized in all 3 games. Even when I tried replaying the remakes to change it up I pretty much just sweeped through all the levels like a speedrun without even really thinking about it (I don't like speedrunning games)

>>8497885
If you ever want to make basically any RC game more challenging just don't buy the armour, and try to beat them without armour. The combat is a lot more fun when enemies can actually do a threatening amount of damage to you, so you're always forced to dodge, and take cover, or use the more outlandish and indirect weapons. With armors you can always just facetank anything the game throws at you.

This doesn't really work in RC1 though for obvious reasons. Deadlocked either but that at least had an outright difficulty setting with a pretty good extreme option. You also can't 100% complete 3 if you do this because it has a skill point for buying the final armor, but you can just not 100% complete it so who cares.

>they dont know how to recover or have backups
There are entire strategies revolving around backups, if you are high-level enough you might have plans A through Z. If they reset as soon as they do a mistake its not because "they don't know what else to do", it's because there's nothing else they can do if they want to have a better time
Again, what metric can you find where you are better than speedruners? I saw that guy (kosmic?) who speedruns SMB1 play advanced romhacks blind. Do you seriously think that you don't need to have extended control over the game's physics and mechanics to pull out the "patterns" they are doing?

Yes, because they have played the game far past any any actual gameplay challenge and are now operating on a completely artificially inserted "challenge" that exists outside the game. In the worst cases speedrunners are hardly even playing the same game anymore, they're just playing Glitch Quest 69.

>> No.8498964

>>8498914
>except they arent because they practice patterns and just reset if they get the wrong one
This is incorrect.
Good speedrunners can in fact play their game backwards and forwards with their eyes closed without save states.
But that doesn't mean OP should be trying to reach that level because that is only "fun" for a certain type of person.

That's where the fucking road starts. Getting better and better at it, discovering new things, trying and approaching things differently, etc. If the gameplay system is really good it's an endless struggle to get better and better at it. That's whats so great about (retro) games.
So stop acting like a bitch and think about how you can get even better at it.

That definitelly is an option for some kinds of games like platformers. But take any random metroidvania that you loved to explore, or an RPG where you had a lot of difficulty figuring out proper builds, or a game where you had difficulty with managing ammo and health. When you get too good at those you could try speedrunning, but that is a completely different kind of challenge from what you found fun in the first place.

no, you just memorize a pattern. And i'm not trying to downplay speedrunners, but you can apply whatever they do with a way slower pace.
Dodging Nemesis' Rockets has nothing to do with speedrunning.
Blocking Jin's hellsweap correctly has nothing to do with speedruning.
Playing perfectly around No.9 and making him miss during the whole fight has nothing to do with speedrunning.
Defeating Sniper Wolf no-damage with every method has nothing to do with speedrunning.
And comboing stylishly in Tales of Destiny DC has nothing to do with speedrunning.

the key to extending the life of a game is self-imposed challenges.
for SotN i like playing luck mode and minimizing the amount of map uncovered. i rely on whatever drops i come across. it makes the game more interesting, much faster to beat, and much more challenging.

>>8497706
I agree with the anon in the post above me, self-imposed challenges are a way to make it more difficult for yourself without the game itself having to do anything different from what it currently does, so it'll still be the same game you love playing, but harder, and it can get much harder depending on how much you like difficulty, and what you choose.

I feel that some of the main examples are speedrunning it, or going for a 1CC, I never do the former because constantly restarting when making a small mistake sounds like torture, I don't know how speedrunners have the mind for it, now for 1CC it can be a pain in a tough game, but with games one has already mastered, it a lot more doable.

I hope it works out for you somehow, OP!
