8492068 No.8492068 [Reply] [Original]

Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favourite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games (this is /vr/, so any PC/6th gen game up to 2007 goes!). If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

The previous thread was scrapped for parts because the OP was fucking terrible, sorry about that: >>8475781

>Interested in a series to get started with?
https://pastebin.com/Vke5tf9e

Remember to bump, /vr/ has been faster as of late and threads get archived much quicker now. Don't be shy: ask questions, share experiences! If anyone has ideas for community events, speak up!

Thread challenge, set by Devil Z:
>Gran Turismo 3
>Arcade Mode
>Trial Mountain
>Any A-Class car.

>What's that?
A track and game is chosen and people can challenge for times on it.

Some of you took issue with my scanline last time I posted. Well, sorry bros.

I play on the sofa in my living room, and the TV (62") is approx. 2 metres away. From that viewing distance, it looks good. Great, in fact. And either way it's better than some shitty CRT shader.

Anyway I made a little extra progress. Turns out Phantom is ezpz, it's like the AI ships are still racing at Rapier speeds and you have an unfair advantage. I did get kinda filtered for a few tries on Stanza with AG-Systems- It's probably my second favourite ship overall (after based Pirhana) but it punishes mistakes harshly.

Also P-Mar can go fuck itself, jesus christ.

What camera does /vroom/ prefer to play their retro racing in? I was more of a 3rd person fan as a kid, especially if I had the option to make the camera be far from the car, like in one of the options for PS1 High Stakes, though if it was close I was fine with it too. As the years progressed I ended up becoming more of a Bumper fan, because it's what my dad would play in and as a kid I wanted to do everything the way he did, and eventually just got used to it, and started loving the sense of speed it gave me. I never managed to get the hang of playing on cockpit cameras even though I think they look immersive, so I stick to what I know.

Huh? The OST of RR V isn't as good as RR4 but it's still fucking GREAT.

True arcade (think ridge racer, scud race and the like) titles are bumper cam all day every day. Home arcade titles (think burnout or midnight club) I use external view. For simcade style games I tend to use external view, though I will use cockpit view for the old need for speed games as they are some of the few titles to do accurate representation of them. For sims I actually prefer bumper cam as one thing good sims have going for them is predictable handling which means even when throwing 500BHP RWD monsters around being able to see exactly where the nose is pointing is really, really nice.

Unrelated to /vr/ but FUCK FH5 for actually implementing window tinting in the cockpit view as it is really distracting. TDU2 does it as well and that can fuck off as well.

Side note: never play rollcage with bumper cam without a bucket nearby.

Well I managed to beat the tedious 8 lap tournament but I think I'm gonna give up at this final one
The first race was in hometown with a snowy road and it was really hard and I only won because I used a shortcut
The second race took place in rocky pass which was even harder and I barely managed to come second because I destroyed my steering and suspension after 2 laps, these tight courses from HP just weren't meant for this game
The third race at Aquatica wasn't too bad but then you get the race at the worst track in the third game, Summit
With night time and sand storm
Not only is the road barely visible but also extremely slippery so its impossible to take slow precise turns
I really feel like giving up now, I can't skip the race and I can't even finish second.
Also I love how it's always the same racer who ends first or second so getting gold is way harder.

Wide gamut screens will naturally stretch srgb content to the wider gamut which - among other things - will often lead to black crush and over saturation. If you clamp the monitor to srgb (assuming your monitor is retardedly calibrated) the game will look a lot better and strictly speaking closer to how it was intended. problem is I can't show you this with an image as by definition any image you view on your screen will be affected by it (same thing as trying to show HDR content on an SDR screen - it can't be done properly).

I agree people should calibrate their monitors more - this site is a very good one for doing it by eye (which is not the ideal way but good enough without getting a device and using displaycal) http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

However this does not account for wide gamut screens (i.e those that deliver over 100% srgb - which is basically all HDR screens and many top end ones). As relevant for /vr/ no old game had its art done factoring in standards like DCI-P3 which is waaaaay wider than srgb so clamping to srgb is something I highly suggest doing. For AMD it is easy as their driver software has the option for it (though it is badly named), Nvidia users rely on external tools.
