In Japan, Darkstalkers is called Vampire: The Night Warriors. White Wolf's trademark is why they had to change the name to Darkstalkers. By the time they got to Vsav they were about ready to say "Fuck it" and license the name from White Wolf rather than bothering with two different names in otherwise-identical ROMs. So they did.

White Wolf proceeded to be the most insufferable brand partner you can imagine. They started demanding revisions in the console version to turn all the characters into lore-accurate World of Darkness monsters. And this was five years before Demon: The Fallen, so in all likelihood one of the requested changes was to turn Morrigan into a vampire instead of a succubus. Capcom was like "Fuck this shit, fuck you, we're just gonna call it Darkstalkers 3, bye."

Fun fact: This abortion of a brand deal also gave us the infamous Street Fighter: The Storytelling Game.

This is most likely the case, because they also had to license the name "Vampire" in Japan (because of Tezuka's manga of the same name.)

Yeah, but Tezuka wasn't demanding they make changes to the game, was he? I understood the problem to be that Capcom only wanted to use their trademark, while White Wolf thought they were getting a whole-ass bespoke fighting game.
