I don't like 7 with its huge sprites (rooms feel smaller like on the GameBoy) and having only four bosses selectable in the beginning makes the game feel...smaller. X3 on the other hand has too big levels, with not much going in on them. ZSNES could also not properly display X3 in the early 2000s and my PC couldn't run SNES9X at the time. I haven't played BN so I can't give you any recommendations there. As far as the Zero series go, there are only 4 games. Just start with 1 and work your way up. The first Zero game admittedly does handle lives kind of awkwardly so if you don't want to get used to it and you just want the best game the series has to offer, play Zero 3 instead.

Zero series has very good gameplay if you can manage to ignore the website and the fact that he holds a pistol (which should be easy to do if you're older than 12 years). Zero 3 is probably the best one in that series and one of the best Mega Man games in general, but start from Zero 1 anyway. Zero 1's not perfect, but it's still good and a great start.

To add onto this, there is a canonical explanation as to why he doesn't have an arm cannon anymore. If you don't want to play the games and find out why, he doesn't have his original armor anymore. His consciousness was uploaded into a new, modern body.

The sprites are actually pretty accurate to the original MM1 sketches (still very much a kid even back then). Visible ingame as the very first thing you see in Japanese MM1, and visible on weapon get/the ending in MM2.
